The Firth Of Clyde Fillies Stakes is an interesting renewal. Favourite for the Group 3 over 6F is Ger Lyons' Headmistress, who is 2 for 2 so far. She has won both starts over 5F, so with the ground riding on the faster side she may be OK stepping up in trip. It was a Listed race she won last time but that race, and her previous win have produced no winners so far. Scot's Grace was hampered in a Group 3 last time and finished 5th, probably better than it panned out that day but the trainer is one O know little of. Hala Hala Athmani bolted up on debut by more than 5 lengths but it looked a weak affair at Carlisle and she was favourite for that contest. This is a lot tougher and she is second favourite here and although Kevin Ryan's filly could improve, I am a wee bit sceptical of a Carlisle maiden winner running to 90 on RPRs on their debut. Hellomydarlin has been busy and has some good form to her name. She's not been winning though and she was blown away by Flotus last time when she was carrying my money. They have high hopes for Flotus now but I felt that Hellomydarlin was a bit below her very best last time. I made a note of Rishes Baar after her debut. It seemed well above average at face value, overcoming a slow start to mow down the 1/3 Fav Vertiginous at big time odds of 28/1. The question became whether Vertiginous had flopped, or whether Rishes Baar might be smart. Well, Vertiginous was out at Ayr today in a Listed contest and she won comfortably at rewarding odds for those who kept the faith. That seems a decent boost to Rishes Baar's form and the O'Meara trained filly os surely entitled to improve from her debut. This race has thrown out a few surprising winners in the past, so I went with her at 10/1. I have also done a saver reverse FC with the Lyons filly. 3.05 Ayr Rishes Baar 10/1 Head Mistress/Rishes Baar RF Be lucky.

Usually the Ayr Western meeting is run on soft ground but the Jocks have actually had decent weather for the last week so they find themselves with good ground. I have no interest in the cavalry charges and nothing much appeals in the supporting races except for the last ITV race at 4:15, a ten runner handicap. Hong Kong Harry makes plenty of appeal having won twice over 7 furlongs at the course before three months off and a warm up race at Lingfield. I assume that since David Allan is aboard that Cruyff Turn is the Tim Easterby first string and he made virtually all to win at the Ebor meeting; however, I prefer the stable second string GARDEN OASIS, who won the Ripon Rowels handicap last time with Challet and Marie’s Diamond behind, comes here on a hat-trick and won over course and distance in June for today’s jockey. My bet of the day runs at Newbury in the 2:15. Hurricane Ivor won the Portland Handicap last time and is a consistent performer and I would not be surprised if King’s Lynn came good in Her Majesty’s colours although it put in a poor performance last time over six and drops a furlong today. Charlie Hills’ Khaadem did set a course record winning the Scarbrough Stakes at the St Leger meeting but previous form suggests he does not want easy ground and he does appear to be an habitual loser. Clive Cox’s seven year old TIS MARVELLOUS comes here on a hat-trick after winning the Shergar Cup Dash and following up in the Beverley Bullet very easily. I think today there is sure to be a strong pace so he can lay up near the leaders and strike late for Adam Kirby.
15:40 Ayr - Commanche Falls (Selection owes me nothing after winning the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood, after an outstanding ride by Connor Beasley for the Michael Dods yard. Same jockey on board again.) Good luck today with your wagers!
What a brilliant ride by William Buick on Solid Stone in the race just run at Newbury. A really gutsy performance by Sir Michael Stoute's charge.
Unfortunately, don't have an account with SkyBet who paid e/w on the first seven places. Yes, Commanche Falls was 7th! Never mind, would only have just got my dosh back!
Solid Stone was a huge price winning the Dubai Duty Free, not struggling with the burden of my cash like previously. I am not sure that I should describe the defeat of Al Aasy as a major shock as he does appear to be one of those horses that wins easily in small fields against inferior opponents but has to have everything go his own way. Having seven or eight pounds in hand on the ratings is no compensation for winning attitude. Tis Marvellous ran his race in the Dubai International Airport World Trophy so no real complaints as he just found a fast finisher too good on the day and got passed for second in the last fifty yards. King’s Lynn ran another stinker but at least I stayed away from it this time.
