By Graeme Anderson Published on Wednesday 19 October 2011 11:00 WES Brown says Sunderland must set their sights on more than an away point at Bolton on Saturday. The Black Cats go into a second successive away fixture in a row, having only lost in the dying minutes at Arsenal on Sunday. But Brown says that while Sunderland would have taken a point at the Emirates, they must look for victories on the road against most teams. âA point away from home is always regarded as a good point but youâve still got to the game looking to win the game. Itâs as simple as that,â he said. âThereâs three points available on your travels, as well as in home games and youâve got to go for them in the Premier League especially because they can really boost you up the table. âIâve been brought up on a culture of believing that an away game is just as much an opportunity for three points and that youâve got to keep that aim in mind, rather than just look to grind out a point on every away trip.â Sunderland have two draws (at Liverpool and Swansea) and two defeats (at Norwich and Arsenal) in the league this season, and also lost away to Brighton in the Carling Cup. âWe need to be better on our away travels,â said Brown. âThe game away to Norwich City, we were very disappointing. âAnd I was disappointed that we only got a point from our away trip to Swansea. âWeâve played well on a couple of occasions but we really have got to look towards getting wins away from home whenever we can. âThe game against Bolton, like the one against Arsenal, is another opportunity.â Sunderland gave away a bad goal for Arsenalâs opener but then defended well, finally losing to a late wonder strike from Robin van Persieâs free-kick. And Brown believes Sunderland are improving at the back, with Michael Turner set to be a major influence when he regains full fitness after a lengthy spell out of the game. âYour first game back is always your hardest if youâve been out for so long,â said Brown. âBut heâs come through a couple of games now and Iâm sure theyâll have been a big help to him. âHeâs got some good qualities â he knows what heâs doing and Iâm sure heâs happy to be playing again. âHeâs a big lad and a good player and thatâs particularly important when you come up against big, strong, physical sides like Bolton. âWe all just have to make sure that we are strong and keep our discipline at the back. âDefensively we know if we can keep it tight at the back and keep a clean sheet then weâve got a platform and weâll always have a chance to get three points. âAway from home you need to be strong in defence and look to build from there.â
I'm starting to get soft........ I'm starting to believe in Bruce and his squad a teeny-weeny bit................ Results now. No more excuses. x
Janie will be kicking my arse marra. I have a medical appointment today so I can avoid her for a few hours.
I prefer pink myself - with something appropriate inside of it, of course. Seriously, I like what Wes is saying here. Good attitude. A game is 90 minutes long and the crowd are many yards away. Therefore, every game is a potential three points. Instill it in the rest, Wes.
In all honesty, I'm fed up with all this rhetoric coming from the club. Just wish they would shut the **** up & get out on the pitch & do the stuff.
We have a manager that picks a team with no intention whatsoever of attempting to win the game. It's like a builder putting 4 joiners & 6 plasterers on a house build without a bricklayer.
Sorry but you say they have no attempt to win the game? You honestly think the players don't want to win? Seriously?
Sorry chunky but I certainly dont get sick of Browns talk, if we could get them all with the same attitude all would be well.
Steve bruce master tactician, how long befoe other premierships begin to copy and archieve the same results.
Quite a big dig at Bruce by Brown there. Saying what all SAFC fans are thinking. Make him captain and hopefully his winning mentality will rub off on some of the players. Cos if nothing changes soon, we're ****ed.
