Winks has regressed rather than progressed and while it’s sad, I’m glad the club tried to cut him loose in the summer. His game against Pacos showed what he’ll do in a slower paced match but he’s not a top 6 PL midfielder, ultimately. It’s a shame he’s never fulfilled his promise as I remember him having one or two excellent games against good European teams, and performing very well for England, a few years back under Poch. But realistically now I think he would do well in Spain or Italy, but I don’t think he’s the type to want the international move. I said after the Pacos second leg that I don’t mind keeping him this season if he only starts the ECL games (and maybe cups against lower league opposition where he might be pressured less) but ultimately it’s probably best if he moves on, for all parties.
I'll never fully understand a player saying they want to stay and "fight for their place" when the overwhelming evidence suggests that they simply aren't part of the club's future. He has gone from first team regular (albeit only by default not merit) to falling behind Hojbjerg, then Skipp and now probably Pape Sarr too in the pecking order. And we are being heavily linked with MORE players in that position (e.g. Kessie) who will also move above him. Part of me admires the earnest dedication and loyalty to the club but the sceptical side of me sees in his apparent refusal to leave the same lack of ambition that sadly colours most of his on pitch performances too.
He probably doesn't see a bigger or better club coming in for him. The new manager also gives him another chance to get back into the starting XI. It wasn't that long ago that we paired him with Sissoko virtually every week.
Remembering when I stood alone against the board telling you all Winks was gash. Now seeing you all pretty much say what I used too... please log in to view this image
I remember being the same lone voice against Trippier, and yet he ended up moving for a decent sum to a better team. Go figure. Football is a weird game.
I can see him doing very well at a Norwich or Newcastle and I think both of those sides would jump at the chance to sign him. But not for the reported £40m.
In fairness to Tripps, he was a decent player who had a really **** final season with us. Winks is just a **** player who's lived off of about 5 good games for Spurs.
You wanted him out because he made tasteless Covid joke, I wanted him out coz he's ****. Therefore I win. Football trumps all in this debate I'm afraid, it's just the rules... I don't make them.
He was a solid squad player prior though, helped raise Walker's game and was generally always dependable. For £3.5m he more than served his purpose, in hindsight should never have sold him, he'll have still been our best RB today (excluding the newly acquired Emerson who we can't judge yet).
I wanted Dier out as soon as Maureen's United came knocking. But no one listened. No one listened. Repent oh ye sinners.
Uh uh...I had it in for him from 2019 when he became way more interested in being a love island wannabe social media starlet than a footballer...his covid stupidity was the icing on the cake ... Now respect your elders and stfu with your minging ideas
