The Newcastle Journal is reporting today that Newcastle have a striker hit-list of four strikers they are looking at closely and will bring anew striker in early in the January transfer window.

That’s the plan in any case and we reported yesterday that negotiations are at an advanced stage for Modibo Maiga to arrive in the first few days of January, and of course he was a major target of the club last summer.

We are hoping the Newcastle Board can see that Newcastle could finish in a very decent position in the Premier League this season, and because of that will get whoever Alan Pardew says he wants in the January transfer window.

But The Journal is reporting that the other three strikers on the hit-list are FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong, SC Freiburg’s Senegal striker Papa Cisse and Lille’s Senegal forward Moussa Sow.

So they are after two Senegal International strikers, and we suppose one of them could join Demba Ba in Jnuary.

But of course it is the African Cup of Nations in January, and three of those four players will be participating in that, as well as Newcastle’s Demba Ba.

Of the four strikers mentioned, 24 year-old Maiga seems to be the cheapest at around £7M with Freiburg wanting around £10M for26 year-old Cisse, and 21 year-old Dutch International de Jong being around £10M.

Lille’s Moussa Sow will certainly not come cheaply, and we would guess the 25 year-old would be at least £10M.

Of the four of them we would probably go for de Jong, as he probably has the most unfulfilled potential, having just turned 21 in August.

We wonder if Newcastle are lining up any other players, like a full back for instance and we wouldn’t mind seeing 23 year-old Dutch International left-back Erik Pieters of PSV Eindhoven coming in during January too, but that has to be an outside chance.

the highlighted part is the most important bit for me with only De Jong being available during that tournament

PLEASE BE SOW, HE IS AWESOME. I WANT HIM HERE SO MUCH!!!

In all honesty, I doubt we'll get him. I'd take De Jong or Maiga, but Cisse looks useless from what I've seen of him.

Wouldn't mind any of them. Would probably prefer De Jong like as he isn't African and would be able to play

Cisse everyday.. that lad seems to always know where the goal is and where to be.. seems a decent poacher with good power and accuracy.

** 2nd highest scorer last season in bundesliga with 22 goals.. already scored 7 in 9 this season... far from useless lol

would like sow or cisse but we'd lose both and Ba to the ACoN so would the sensible thing to do buy De Jong or rely on Best/Shola/Lover to fill the gap till they return

To be fair to Cisse, he's playing in a very poor team in the Bundesliga

I'd take him if available but I'd be happy enough with De Jong. He's no Kelle Vossen though...

    De Jong and Sow...

Have them two as front line strikers, Ba and Best as back-up, Shola as epic impact sub, and move Lover on.

Having seen a few of their games, he looks like s lightly more mobile Shola, not what we want.

    Cisse pls.

Why the hell would anyone want De Jong? He's scored 21 goals in 51 apps as a striker in the Dutch league, with 14 goals in 44 apps for Twente in 2009.

I know there's all this stuff about 'potential', but he's 21 years old now, and if there was any hint that he could cut it in the far more difficult Premier League, then it should be evident by now. If he's got an average scoring record there, it's a major risk to hope that he will essentially find it easier to score in the Premier League, which is what would have to happen if we want him to score more goals than he is now.

Cisse had 22 in 32 last season and 7 in 9 this season in the Bundesliga. Now that is more stable evidence of a man who is too good for the BL and could step up to the EPL.

we should be ok for the ACoN, HBA and Best will probably be up front. then we have shola.. then at a push lovenkrands and ranger.. it will only last around 1 month i think anyways.. plus we could always get a short term loan for cover it need be

If it's anyone other than Messi then I'll be disappointed in Ashley and Llambias.

But Barca's ultimatum was Messi, Xavi and Villa for Shola, and we can't afford to lose our star for three such average players!

Apparently we're after Messi, Thiago and Pique, but they don't want to part with Pique.

I'd give the Pope on a stick for Messi but I'd miss Shola. As an aside, Shola would look awesome wearing the Pope's mitre.

Exactly... Why anyone would reject the idea of one of these strikers just because they are away for 1-2 months is insane considering they'd be coming here on a 4-5 year deal I'd imagine. Time to start looking more long term than mid Feb peeps!
