The problem for people like Pompey and Toby is that their lives have been largely devoid of human contact. They dont understand how people form relationships and become close friend.

Their life is lived through a cartoon world presented by the Guardian. Somebody is either white, black or other, British born or immigrant, straight white or trans/homosexual, rich or poor. This is why they are incapable of getting to know somebody. They judge people in an instance and slot them into their identity pigeon holes and think they don't need to get to know them. Then they despair when 99% of people realise they are shallow and inadequate. Their only defence is to fight back and insult everybody. This just confirms people's judgement of them as shallow and inadequate. They have lived a life of loneliness, devoid of marriage or living with somebody because they are incapable of forming relationships.

I have a friend who's Romanian. She worked in a restaurant and when covid started she was put on furlough. When the restaurant closed she got another job immediately. You would not meet a more hard working, loving and full of fun person.
