I assumed you were referring to anomalies like Navratilova, where the US was effectively buying in success. Having looked again at what you posted, are you making it broader and saying that it's bizarre that anyone should represent their country in any sport? That really is radical. No World Cup. No Olympics etc...?
Every single person that i know is either judgemental, prejudice, racist, anti immigrant etc from judging someone by their haircut to the colour of their skin, from tattoos to their country of origin, from accent to the way they dress. We all do it at some point in our live, success in a certain field, waters that down yet it really shouldnt. I am chuffed this lass one the tennis, its a great story but would she have been taken into the brittish hearts if she had got knocked out in the qualifiers?
Windrush was wrong, apologies have been given by the Home Office and compensation is being paid. Personally, I don't care if the next Roger Federer is in a dingy, if entrance to the UK is illegal, it feeds organised crime and means people with money jump the queue over immigrants that come here legally.
Don't you think national teams bring colour to life? I seem to remember you used to follow the England football team overseas. Will you deprive others of that (arguable) pleasure?!
It will take one incredibly brave Home Secretary to solve the Channel problem. The Aussies turned the boats around and it worked. Illegal immigrants won't pay organised crime thousands of pounds if there's a good chance they'll be turned around and sent back to France.
I remember not long ago there was chat about being able to play for the country you played your club football in, now that would have been a step too far!
Maybe just maybe its a problem/issue that the government doesnt want a solution to or maybe just maybe im talking absolute ****e. Probably the latter.......
If they don't solve it, they'll lose votes to the number of Brexit nationalist parties that seem to be cropping up. Not sure Priti Patel will survive a Cabinet reshuffle because of her failure
No I do…I support England and love being English and very proud of that fact. However I can also acknowledge the bizarre concept of it all
I think team sports are slightly different than individuals. Primarily though, don't think it matters where you are from, it's all down to money in the end. If you are lucky enough to be gifted with some talent, and then even luckier to be spotted by the relevant association in the country you reside, then the amount of sponsorship and grants you receive from the state is going to help you rise to the top. Hence the strength of China, USA and GB in competitions like the Olympics compared to someone like Syria, Surinam or Botswana (picked at random, no offence to any of those countries). It's funny how none of these athletes chose to represent poorer nations.
