WES Brown says Sunderland must set their sights on more than an away point at Bolton on Saturday.

The Black Cats go into a second successive away fixture in a row, having only lost in the dying minutes at Arsenal on Sunday.

But Brown says that while Sunderland would have taken a point at the Emirates, they must look for victories on the road against most teams.

“A point away from home is always regarded as a good point but you’ve still got to the game looking to win the game. It’s as simple as that,” he said.

“There’s three points available on your travels, as well as in home games and you’ve got to go for them in the Premier League especially because they can really boost you up the table.

“I’ve been brought up on a culture of believing that an away game is just as much an opportunity for three points and that you’ve got to keep that aim in mind, rather than just look to grind out a point on every away trip.”

Sunderland have two draws (at Liverpool and Swansea) and two defeats (at Norwich and Arsenal) in the league this season, and also lost away to Brighton in the Carling Cup.

“We need to be better on our away travels,” said Brown.

“The game away to Norwich City, we were very disappointing.

“And I was disappointed that we only got a point from our away trip to Swansea.

“We’ve played well on a couple of occasions but we really have got to look towards getting wins away from home whenever we can.

“The game against Bolton, like the one against Arsenal, is another opportunity.”

Sunderland gave away a bad goal for Arsenal’s opener but then defended well, finally losing to a late wonder strike from Robin van Persie’s free-kick.

And Brown believes Sunderland are improving at the back, with Michael Turner set to be a major influence when he regains full fitness after a lengthy spell out of the game.

“Your first game back is always your hardest if you’ve been out for so long,” said Brown.

“But he’s come through a couple of games now and I’m sure they’ll have been a big help to him.

“He’s got some good qualities – he knows what he’s doing and I’m sure he’s happy to be playing again.

“He’s a big lad and a good player and that’s particularly important when you come up against big, strong, physical sides like Bolton.

“We all just have to make sure that we are strong and keep our discipline at the back.

“Defensively we know if we can keep it tight at the back and keep a clean sheet then we’ve got a platform and we’ll always have a chance to get three points.

“Away from home you need to be strong in defence and look to build from there.”

As heroin is commonly refereed to as 'brown' the thread title might be a little misleading.

I prefer pink myself - with something appropriate inside of it, of course.

Seriously, I like what Wes is saying here. Good attitude. A game is 90 minutes long and the crowd are many yards away. Therefore, every game is a potential three points. Instill it in the rest, Wes.

In all honesty, I'm fed up with all this rhetoric coming from the club.

Just wish they would shut the **** up & get out on the pitch & do the stuff.

We have a manager that picks a team with no intention whatsoever of attempting to win the game.

    It's like a builder putting 4 joiners & 6 plasterers on a house build without a bricklayer.

Sorry but you say they have no attempt to win the game? You honestly think the players don't want to win? Seriously?

Quite a big dig at Bruce by Brown there. Saying what all SAFC fans are thinking.

Make him captain and hopefully his winning mentality will rub off on some of the players. Cos if nothing changes soon, we're ****ed.
