Ironically we're falling foul of prejudices here by tarring all Hungarians with the same brush. I'm sure there are plenty of them who aren't, but it seems they have a strong "ultras" contingent. Perhaps the fault lies in their governments acceptance of these groups and failure to control them. This is where cultural differences could be important - I remember a few years back a Russian politician (might have been Putin but I'm not sure about that) saying they didn't want to stop football hooliganism because fighting is "manly". That's an attitude that might take a lot of getting over.
I see the powers that be have allowed Cavani to switch to no.21 so C.Ronaldo can have no.7 then. I've no issue with this, why would I? It's only a short number. Why does the number rule even exist though? What's the point on it if it can be overruled so simply anyway?
Does make you wonder what extraordinary circumstances were met for this to happen. As far as I can see, player joins, player wants number. That’s it…. Circumstances are no different from any other time so as you say, why even have the rule unless it’s to protect fans who buy a shirt with players name and number on the back. but clubs then normally offer swaps for that kind of thing where can get new shirt or store credit etc
I haven't checked but my initial thought is that a player is registered for the season by both name and shirt number to avoid wrongly identifying them should a particular circumstance occur. Players do change numbers all the time and again I haven't checked but I think it's usually at the start of the season. Like you I don't mind who swaps numbers but if there's a rule then exceptions shouldn't be made.
True although the Latinx communities start before the border.. the South West has a lot of Hispanics.... But Hispanic is a mixed race anyway, one of my best friends in Uni was a Mexican girl, who, until she spoke, you would never guess she was Mexican. There's quite a number of "white looking" Mexicans.
Once registered with the PL shirt numbers are for the season, unless the number becomes vacant due to player sales. To change it they’ll have needed special dispensation from the PL board, as per the rules.
I've never heard any of my Hungarian relatives saying anything racist. There again my Mum is the only one that speaks English... So they might all be vehement racists and I never realised.
I don't know the rules regarding how and when numbers swap. I think it would have been funny if Ronaldo couldn't be #7 and stay CR7, but I'm honestly not that peeved that he got it. It's only fair. The only purpose for numbers is, as you say identification... So as long as they're not changing mid match it's ok. Something should be don't about Chelsea all having the same number though. That's confusing. Still not sure why they all have the number three on, or what that's even supposed to mean. /Yes, I am joking... But it does look like they're too small a club to get a sponsor...
