Yeah the main thing about the game mechanics as I remember them is that no matter how much cash the nobody is they are considered a minnow and nobody wants to join them and their owners never want to build up the ground. So yeah the money just flows away. it is rather limited as there is no "win the lottery" owner changes or "disastrous owners" and the intelligence is just not there to realise the club now is a championship club with 50mil in the bank and adding 20k in fans is a good thing. I found that 35 years olds would rather retire than join the club first but if you got a few ex league players in you could fly it even with the silly move the arrows tactics. I think the game mechanics make it hard and i also think they programmed in hard limits by club. I could lead Liverpool to a quadruple and the owners would never ever invest in the stadium more than once which they did early on. no matter what we are locked in. They just wouldn't. anyway for me the issue is still the game mechanics are not that realistic in that it simulates sort of developing a tactic but if you actually ever ran the game in the grpahics mode there was it would bear zero relation to reality. I much preferred the 00s where you basically have a formation and you said you be more attacking by moving the guy up a lost or making his run forward longer. that was it and it was fine. At this point i've never tried mobile versions of game and have not loaded/cannot load the game on my work laptop and am not buying a machine to play a game.
2011 was probably when Football Manager peaked. 2014 was the last OK year. I have the mobile version of 2016 and I've got to try out 2018 and 2021 (don't own either). It just got too much drudgery after 2014... Also it gets harder every year to the point it's less fun. I want to take small teams and make them better. I want an easy mode... Yeah you can win 2021 with a good team, but I want it to be unrealistic and let me wheel and deal to win with minnows... After trying 18 and 21 don't think I'm going to buy any new versions after 2014.
yes i agree, though "harder" really means spending far too much time dicking about with inconsequential sliders to try pretend you are a football coach. it caters to a certain type of geek we no longer are It did need updating in the transfer section with agents and the ability to unsettle players and all that good stuff but even there its wasn't quite there and i've no clue what its like now. They seem to have written the hands off manager out of the game totally. the guy who pays good money to his coaching staff to do the coaching My view is you should be able to get through a season in an evening, run the matches quick and play the rest of the game along. I'm not one for sitting watching a screen tick by and adjusting like my name is rafa every minute or so to the the result.
Not Football Manager on the spectrum back in the 80's. (back when if someone bid on a player and you turned them down the player would always be injured afterwards)
I'm trying to think when the game was really easy. I can just recall for sure turning rafa out and feeling bad about it and playing a 352 formation or a 4231 maybe and the only thing to do was tell the full backs to go forward and the no 6 to sit back and that was it. Maybe 09 or 10. It was too basic in the talk to the press ****e and for me that's where these things always fall down. Theres only so many times you go through this loop but they had 10000 players in a database but about 20 talk to press topics. I just felt they went down the fifa alley. There was a time in fifa 10 or 13 or there about then you could have great fun sliding your mates keeper and injuring them instantly. Fifa got really technical and hard to play that whenever i got challenged I'd play like tuchel I'd pass the ball about all safe and nice and frustrate anyone to death and draw 0-0. If I actually practiced I could score of one particular angle bit otherwise it was just too.much like hard work. I just liked kicking players in fifa. Cant do it anymore. No "extreme" or 80s mode. FM is the same. For technical geekery. Fiddle with a.million sliders and go on line and spunk over how great you are. Whatever happened to ignoring how bad liverpool were in real.life and winning the quadruple and getting Ferguson the sack like the golden days lol.
I almost always answer in the same way too. I still find though, no matter which version of FM you play 4--2-3-1 is always the best formation to have. Vary the other tactics and instructions, but never a reason to stray from 4-2-3-1 in FM.
The press stuff is always a huge let down on FM. They tried to make it more interesting with body language and tone but t has such small impact on anything that actually happens Feel like they need far less press conferences and far more questions with more than the same answers each time. Along with that, have the answers actuakly impact something. have it impact team morale, have it impact opposition morale if you can wind them or the other manager up etc. Make having a good relationship with the press mean something, maybe you get hard time in press if you lose a couple games if you have poor relationship with them which leads to more fan fury etc. Generally I just make assistant do all talk as speeds things up.
Less than two weeks with the club and he's already picking fights with my Assistant Manager during a summer friendly cup I set up to get them ready for the season. Damnit Andy Cuthbert!
this triggers a memory. I think i installed FM when i was on a 2 week work trip 5 o 6 years and recall struggling with 433. that explains it i guess. It really is retrograde stuff.
yeah, its a lot more difficult to program actual interactions i suppose. having a set 20 odd attributes and then the computer just matches players off and the better attribute wins the game etc. same mechanic. I found that FM if you aid just one thing wrong you were dinged in a database for ever either with owners or press or player etc and life's just not like that. In general then you fell into one of a few categories that just doesn't reflect the type of people managers are. I would prefer them to pivot away from slier junkies and towards more of that sort of stuff. Ultimately they should add in footballers having affairs with their brother's wife or getting caught in hotels with hookers etc. Make it reflect real Salford file.
I didn't get the details, but that is my assumption. I tried to loan him to Torquay to get some first team experience but he refused to go. I guess he'd rather sit in the pub all day rather than play football
I think in fairness putting cuthbert up in fawlty Towers and kicking about with torquay where carling isn't even on sale is a bit much of an ask.
In all seriousness, I bet there's some, if they're descended from slaves in the Caribbean they wouldn't have had a surname when released so they got to pick their own. (In the US there are a lot of black people with early President's last names... A lot of Black people called 'Washington' for example). It's not totally impossible for a newly freed black man to have had a positive experience with a Cuthbert and so pick that as his new surname.
Afternoon all. Just joined the forum, was a regular back in the day on 606 (same username) before it all went to pot and was on/helped run a couple of LFC forums after that for a while, but not been on any for a while though!
Welcome, watch out for the ****s, there's lots of them on here. Give me a nudge if you're unsure who they are
