I think the dregs of this window are going to be PL teams picking up weird, cheap players from across the continent as the financially weaker European clubs get desperate. PL teams have such a significant spending advantage this summer, even while still “struggling”. I’m excited to see it!
This would be an especially weird one. He was on loan there last season from Celtic and they only officially signed him in June.
That was really strange. As you rightly say he was immense for us but pretty much disappeared afterwards. Guess it’s all a question of ‘fit’.
In an interview he did, I remember him saying that he was a bit overwhelmed by life at a club like United and that coaching changes worked against him. He didn’t seem keen on training in the morning and then doing hours of media/commercial and advertising work. By the time he got to Everton, his confidence was gone and his athletic ability was a bit diminished.
But they seem like they think they can make an instant 2m+ profit in just months. For a club of their size that is probably a big deal It is more weird given that we have 4 central defenders. Perhaps we are concerned that Stephens isn’t going to sign up for a contract extension. Or maybe there is an offer in for Bednarek now that he is 3rd or 4th choice ?
I wonder if this is one of those opportunities that has unexpectedly arisen that we didn’t think would come up. As you would have to imagine that we wouldn’t have done the Broja loan had this guy been available? Because we have 4 strikers one the books who we will definitely keep and then 2 more (long and Obafemi) who we seem to want the to try and move on and then Redmond and Walcott who can cover there. Perhaps we could sign him and let him stay there a year and he takes Broja’s spot next year assuming the chances of a permanent deal there are limited Or maybe Obafemi goes as part of the deal? If he goes I expect it will be to Everton though
Had a bit of a read of the Everton transfer rumours on their board None of them are interested in Jebbison at all and were far more interested in the rumoured Rondon signing which now looks like it is happening They are also turning their noses up at Ross Barkley and also Martial and Lingard because they are “not good enough for Man United”. I think they have forgotten what club they support Also any signing they don’t like seems to be the DoFs fault whereas it seems Rafa (or whomever the manager at the time was for old signings) is being given credit for ones they like Interesting reading at least
I'm surprised he isn't getting more playing time with Sheffield United at current, because he looked good in the PL last year and their aged attack is really struggling in the Championship. I stumped for Jebbison earlier in the summer, and while this is 95% just paper talk, I'd definitely take him if he only costs £5-7m or something (assuming we actually have that sort of money to spend).
I think Oostende bought him (at the previously agreed price 1.5m) trying to turn a profit - he was thought of as one of the best defenders, as well as player of the season by a footie publication.
Not even a whisper regarding incomings. Feels like we always get a late transfer in, so would be disappointing to not get that deadline day rush. (And go into the season light in midfield) I hope we are pushing for a loan with option/obligation to buy, as cash isn’t in abundance. Seen Anguissa from Fulham is heading off to Napoli for that sort of deal, so there are possibilities out there.
I'm quite sanguine about the state of our squad as it stands, especially when Will Smallbone and Stuey return. Let's keep the money for January in the event of another injury crisis.
Thing is last I checked Smallbone is just going to be low down the list for the number 10 positions No way he plays as one of the two 6s
Have I missed something on loan rules? Lots of mention about how we only have one slot left . Pretty sure Fulham loaned in half a team last season Isn’t it max of two domestic or premier league (not sure which) There never seems to be a mention of overseas loans
Even if he was fit, I could barely see Smallbone getting a look in this season due to our options in the two attacking midfield position. It's a shame that he is injured, because otherwise I'd have been to give him a season of first team football on loan at a decent Championship club.
I think, despite his size, his future is playing deeper and more centrally. It’s a better fit for his ability and I don’t think many of us were predicting JWP becoming a force in that position at the same age. (Though I remember a long thread on here debating wether JWP was going to pan out or not around Koeman-era and I said that he’d be our Xavi or Iniesta. Someone needs to find that thread so that a bunch of prognosticators can be made into pillocks.)
