Whatever next? Foreign owners want to protect their investments by abolishing promotion and relegation <yikes>

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15336398.stm

Oh well, at least the last local derbies ever ended with a resounding 9 - 2 aggregate romp to the yellow boys 9-2 <ok>

I hope this never bears fruit - as will all fans in lower leagues at this time.

A ridiculous proposal and should never be allowed to happen. All these "top teams" might as well sod off and play in their dream of a European League.

It's unfortunate that the head of the LMA doesn't know the rules of the Premier League.

The FA has a special share and has a veto on various issues including:

7.2 Notwithstanding any provision in the Articles or the Rules to the contrary, each of the
following matters shall be deemed to be a variation of the rights attaching to the Special
Share and shall accordingly be effective only with the consent in writing of the Special
Shareholder and without such consent shall not be done or caused to be done:

7.2.4 the making and adoption of or any amendment to, removal of or waiver of any of the
provisions of the Rules which relate to:

    (b) the number of Members and promotion to and relegation from the League;

I have posted a similar thread on the Arsenal board.I have always said that the Premier League would end up like an American sports league where teams would be franchised.

Let Man U ,Man City and Chelsea play in a 3 team league in Qatar ........... Arsenal are not disgustingly over financed and Liverpool are not the same standard:emoticon-0105-wink:

Given the differences between club's finances in the Premier League it would be absolutely pointless. What do these clubs have to play for? The top four getting more money from TV rights would mess it up even further. It may work in a league like the Championship but it's just a ridiculous idea.

Absolutely terrible idea, the danger of relegation is always there but that is what makes the leagues interesting with changes every season new teams to see, if everything remained the same it would be boring. This would effectively put a lot of clubs out of business as you can never get out League 2 or League 1 or Championship etc do you think many fans would be arsed to turn up?

They should name the owners who support this stupid idea and they should perhaps explain themselves to all the football fans in this country.

The Liverpool chief exec was bleating last week about them negotiating their own overseas TV rights - which would cripple 14 of the 20 Premier teams.

Abolishing prom/relegation to protect those newly-arranged inflated TV rights would be the end of competitive football as we know it.<devil>

How about this for a solution:

Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all bugger off and play in the European Super League that will appear in a couple years.
Scrap the play-offs and relegation FOR ONE SEASON ONLY and have the top five in the championship promoted to the Premiership, top five in League one up to the Championship etc so that all the leagues will still have the same number of teams competing.
To makes sure the leagues are still competitive the above mentioned five sides won't be eligible for European places meaning that although you can't get relegated there is still something for teams to play for.
The following season can revert back to the traditional relegation/promotion format.
When the European Super League collapses due to the inevitable infighting that will occur the five who left will be welcomed back with open arms on the proviso they re-enter the league at the Conference North/South level depending on their location.

I know this will never happen, but its a more realistic idea than scrapping relegation from the Premier League.

Just shows the complete contempt foreign owners show this league and, crucially, the other teams that make up the nation that gave birth to this game.

I've said it before, but the relegations have made me, and I'm sure most of you, humble and hugely respectful to the small team fans across this land. I've got far more respect for the Carlisle fans that travelled clear across the country to watch the last game of the season that didn't even make any difference to them than your stereotypical ManU glory hunter that hasn't been 100 miles from old Trafford.

You should be in the top division because the football you've played warrants your inclusion. Not down to your geographical location makes you prime real estate and therefore a great investment to a probably corrupt business. It's never been more important that we are owned by local people and run by sensible, talented individuals on and off the pitch

Whole situation with the top teams becoming brands makes me feel physically sick, I wouldn't want anything to do with them let alone support them.

If your a supporter of a club outside the prem then you may aswell not bother supporting your club, everyones dream from crawley to west ham is to be in or back in the premier league, so why rip that dream away for some rich foreign a**holes just to milk the riches even more! The worst thing is though is that its an englishman heading the idea which has been around for years <yikes>

Relegation is a part of the game which makes it so exciting, just as promotion does and at the end of the day proberbly most of these owners arent even going to be effected by relegation so why try and abolish it!!?? I hope for the sake of ENGLISH FOOTBALL this doesnt happen...

Beef and ICHB, you are both correct, these mega-rich owners want a scenario where they can't jeopardise their investment.

So where does that leave Delia Smith, Dave Whelan, Jez Moxey (if he's still around) all of whom have invested time and money into their respective clubs - only to now see plans to blow all of their efforts out of the water.

If this ruling was introduced two years ago, we'd have been a league 1 club for the rest of our days, and we've proved to all and sundry that we are WAY better than that <ok>

It was 4 down (22 to 20) with only 2 coming up. We finnished third bottom above Leicester and Ipswich and so would have gone down anyway. It was Palace who were the unlucky buggers.
