Preston North End v Swansea City

    Competition - Sky Bet Championship
    Venue - Deepdale
    Date - 28 August 2021
    Kick off - 3:00 pm

Following their 4-1 Carabao Cup win over Plymouth, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is a return to Championship action with an away match at Preston.

OnTuesday evening, Morgan Whittaker scored a late second-half hat-trick as the Swans overcame League One Plymouth Argyle to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Academy product Daniel Williams put the much-changed Swans in front after half an hour with a deflected 20-yard shot.

Plymouth hit back in the second half as substitute Rhys Shirley volleyed in.

Whittaker restored the Swans' lead with a fine low strike and scored a second after Jamal Lowe's superb run before adding a third with a neat finish.

The forward's goals were all scored in the final 11 minutes and made the score a rather flattering one for Swansea, who claimed a third win under new head coach Russell Martin and their second in four days, though this was a team showing seven changes from Friday's 1-0 Championship triumph at Bristol City.

Later the same evening, two goals from Emil Riis Jakobsen helped Preston North End to victory over League One Morecambe in round two of the Carabao Cup.

The 22-year-old Dane gave the visitors the lead after just seven minutes at the Mazuma Stadium, before doubling the advantage later in the first half.

Morecambe hit back to level through Anthony O'Connor and Cole Stockton.

But goals from Ryan Ledson and then Sepp van den Berg with 10 minutes to go put the match beyond the hosts.

The Swans have played Preston on 65 previous occasions, winning 26, drawing 18 and losing 21.

Whilst one of those defeats was the 1964 FA Cup semi-final 2-1 loss to Preston, arguably the most memorable was the Division Two encounter at Deepdale in 1981 that saw John Toshack’s Swansea side secure promotion to the top division in English football for the first time in the Club’s history.

Turning to Saturday’s match, both teams come into the match having scored 4 goals against League One opposition in the Carabao Cup and so both sides will be full of confidence.

However, I think that they will both have to settle for a point with a 1-1 draw. <cheers>

Thanks Taff.....that 1981 game at Preston will never be repeated...over 10000 Swans fans filled the ground with home fans looking to stay up and a couple of hundred Blackburn fans backing the home side to win to help them gain promotion.. we know the result and this is now history.kj
Hopefully RMs changes and tactics will see us gain another win two nil..

Thanks again Taff. Yes a memorable opposition for us. Hopefully the combination of players returning, more time on the training ground plus increased confidence will lead to a 2-0 win to the Swans. Piroe and Paterson the scorers.

Remember the season before that when all you did for the second half was pass back to the goal keeper ended 0-0

Thomas Bramall will be the referee when Swansea City face Preston North End at Deepdale on Saturday (3pm).

The Sheffield official will be taking charge of the Swans for the first time, and will oversee just his third game at Championship level.

He previously refereed Preston in their home defeat to Luton last term, and has been refereeing in the EFL since the 2018-19 season.

Bramall will be assisted by Richard Wild and Steven Meredith, while Robert Lewis is the fourth official.

    We're still very much a work in progress, I'll happily take a draw 1 - 1.

Would have thought that Whittaker had done more than enough midweek to get a start before Cullen ….

Cooper has been playing well but out he goes as well

    I
    I completely agree Taff.
The subs were blocked out on your post so have included them below - hopefully Whittaker will repeat his midweek exploits if he comes on in the 2nd half
