At least it was sunny, you miserable sod. Wear a hat.

Paultons Park sounds like the seventh circle of hell to me, good for you for even taking the kids there. I hope they enjoyed themselves at least.

Interesting how quiet this thread goes the more and more indefensible Brexit becomes. Even with Covid providing the 'perfect storm' scenario it is still **** beyond belief.

It’s a bit like when I’ve stated, from a left wing point of view, a couple of times about how free movement of Labour was actually detrimental for working people and only brought wages down and profits up for unscrupulous employers……had one person on here at least have the bollox to say they disagree (though not expand on WHY they disagree)…..however most of the pro EU mob kept quiet

I might rise to the bait at the moment Stainsy. (But then saw your tweet...which is a lot of what I was going to say)
Prices are rising, availability of many many things is falling...because we do not have the trained man power to man the supply chain, and or pick/manufacture a lot of goods.

This is because we have been reliant on cheap(er) man power from abroad.
Now that is a mixture of Brexit and a bit of Covid (I would say Brexit/Ellers would say Covid...but it doesn't matter which really).

The reason HGV drivers etc are asking for higher wages is because they are needed and they can...(push whilst the iron is hot, good socialist principle there).

The answer is always and has always been we need all these skills to be as "home grown" as possible. I think we can all agree on that.

HGV is a very skilled (and good paying but antisocial) job and takes time to become very skilled, and in time we will get enough...but not yet. (Did not Boris think of that...probably NO)

So lets take the case of the fruit pickers...I assume anyone could do that, but we did not have enough this year, why because we could not recruit... and that was two reasons...the pay was so poor, and that a lot of people in this country do not "expect" to have to do hard manual labour for little money...so never applied. In the UK we have a high expectation of our careers and life style and it costs more to live in this country than it does in other countries.

I am not sure many of the food producers are fat cats as you said. I have seen figures that indicate that it costs as much to produce a pint of milk as it does to sell it...same with things like tomatoes too.

Yes it would be a wonderful world where no one is exploited......but the smoothing out of the work force will take time and revolution...only then will the estate agent earn the same as the fruit picker, and the the man who delivers your milk earn the same as the boss who runs a bank

A very well reasoned and thoughtful post Beth, Thankyou.
But on your last paragraph, I’m not expecting all pay to be equal…of course some will earn more than others. However I do wish for wages to be fair and for the pay gap between the executive bosses and the workers be less than it is now….this gap is growing and needs to be addressed.
Personally I feel the revolution has begun, with us leaving the EU as it was and is another way for fat cat bosses to make billions for their pension pots and so called wages.
Now the battle at home begins

There are currently around 1.6m people in the UK who are categorised as being unemployed, yet there are also around 1m vacancies which employers are struggling to fill. Yes, a lot of these will be low-paid jobs, but they are at least subject to minimum wage regulations. I think it's just a fact that EU workers were doing jobs that Brits aren't prepared to do. I can see the attractiveness of the argument which says 'pay them more, then', but I'm afraid that this will lead to higher prices rather than bosses taking pay cuts.

viva la resolution Stainsy. However it’s miles away, and the likes of Mogg and Johnson will exploit the situation in the meantime, as the tribal behaviour of politics will allow it. In the last year or so I’ve seen elements of the media and a proportion, not all, but a core of Tory/leave voters turn on the National Trust, teachers, the England football team, the RLNI and only today one of the **** rags was stoking the flames by running a story on a couple of paramedics upload a video of them dancing to social media… whilst on their break!! And that’s hardly the start of ill will towards the NHS. To be honest I didn’t think those would be the targets, but the targets they were and there’s enough of the public have picked that ball up and ran with it as forums and social media will testify.

in other news that Rob Dickie’s a bit good.

Didn’t Johnson already ‘temporarily’ remove limitations on restricted hours for truckers? Not heard much about that recently, but it came of no real surprise. Just one being passed under ‘emergency status’ bit like the rights to protest bill, frightening to think what’s being passed we don’t even know about.
