Pure art that was. Not as pure as mine in Headingly... spot the # 14 ? Circa '67. 4 of us rented the place for a few years behind the Headingly cricket ground (and RL obviously !). Before we all emigrated - 3 to Canada, one to Uganda. Takes me back somewhat. Never saw a test match there, but managed the odd pee in the back Broomfield Crescent after a few pints in the Original Oak.
Great to see an England opening pair actually look as though they wanted to be there although India's bowling was well below par today, unsurprisingly!
I lived in Headingley for two years in my student days. Had a great time and spent many an hour in the Original Oak and Skyrack, and then often on to Carnegie. It was the year of the cricket world cup (83?) and realised I could get into a lot of games for the second innings, for nowt!
LUU was one of the best venues for top class bands from the start of the mid-50's. Left in '72, but presume it continued after my spell there. Headingley weekends so many student parties. Brilliant - best 7 years of my life still. As they say, "Crumpet Galore."
post-grad research degree - high temp ceramic protective coatings for various alloys (space construction alloy materials). Fun eh? I really only stayed on for the music scene. Similar to non-stick pan coatings really.
That was a fantastic first day. How can they be that **** on the last day of the last test and so good on the first day of this? Insane.
Quite an incredible day's Cricket, you just never know what you get from this side. Really pleased for Hameed, after a shaky start in the last test, he looks as if he can make this opener's spot his own. Let's hope they can keep it going on day 2.
Yes. We lodged in the Henry Price Building next door in our second year - occationally going to early Sat morning lectures in our pyjamas carrying monster hangovers.
Hence my use of the word "occationally". Typically only two out of the 4 of us showed up, sometimes only one, so the non-attendees could copy the lecture notes taken by the unlucky bastard(s) whose turn it was to show up. It was a filler "Pure Maths" course on Sat (at bloody 9 a.m). Just imagine. Probably 50 students in the lecture theatre, everyone had to sign in, including a few forged signatures. The lecturers didn't give a toss. I played football in the afternoon, the other 3 played rugby union, so in a sense the early need to get up allowed for a semi-conscious sobering up period so we could start again Sat night. Off to hear that night's band - Sundays? Did they ever exist? In retrospect they did. After moving to Headingly, late Sunday afternoon's I vaguely recall there was a regular feature attempting to play crown green bowls at "The Original Oak". It was less arduous than attempting to read the Sunday papers. My brain hurts, as does my liver, at the thought of it all.
Burns out for 61, well bowled by Shami, Malan in now. More of the same or a batting collapse? twt Hameed still going well, I like the way he gets his head right over the ball, it just looks right.
Great day for England, 2 wickets left, 345 ahead. The top order looked much more comfortable than we've seen for a long time. India only getting 70-odd must have contributed to that comfort factor but the runs still need scoring. The only disappointment for me was Buttler, he just didn't look good with the bat. Is it time to rest him and give JB the gloves?
