Varying reports of his wage being between £38,000 and £54,000 a week, would seem too much in our wage structure to me. Screams of Real Betis putting his name on the press to draw attention and potential suitors.
I guess he would cost too much and his wages would be too high I agree. Probably Betis or his agent using us to try to stimulate interest in him. Price and wages both almost certainly too high for us, although obviously if we are talking about 14m for someone with 68 Portuguese caps with loads of experience in La Liga or a guy with four half-seasons in Norway and Russia, I'd choose this guy.
I think this thread sums up the problem with Carvalho well: He's made little impact at Betis, feels like he's riding on a reputation he built as a talented prospect 6+ years ago. He's not a "true" DM, he played alongside one whenever he played last season. I feel like the midfield mix would be DM + Gilmour/Carvalho + McLean/Lees-Melou. Age, injury record....unless it's an insane deal like £5m to sign him, I don't see it. Given Sky Sports seemed to have this first, I suspect a high-profile leak to get media attention and worry our actual target(s) into action.
A reported £18m and wages up to £40k. This is way out of our usual spend but there may be a few twists to this scenario that we are not privy to. Perhaps Aarons and/or Cantwell is being sought? Anyway, there may be a whiff of desperation in this as we clearly do not want to get relegated again so soon after promotion. Perhaps a DM capable of covering for a defence that is not quite up to the mark and cannot be strengthened for what ever reason. I just hope that if this comes off then we do not get another Naismith type player who is just here for the ride and wages.
A loan option and buy if we stay up if he plays more than 50% of the games sounds tempting. If he's **** and sits on the bench we can give him back even if we survive. He proves he's worth the money and we keep him . http://sportwitness.co.uk/amid-repo...dfielder-claim-loan-deal-increasingly-likely/
Disappointed that there's no centre backs being linked . IF we don't strengthen and go with our current centre back options I'm going to moan until January.
I wish we were looking at Rob Dickie at QPR... The Carvalho stuff looks like it could be us leaking that we are prepared to go elsewhere to get Normann's agent and Rostov to behave more sensibly.
Carvalho has the baggage of high wages and sounds like he's been a thorn in the side of Betis, could be another Oliviera type character. He's obviously got massive potential but a bit risky
Movement in the transfer market for a DM: Seems like this was coming for a while, little interest in him, and we'd probably be subsidising his wages in the championship again.
You could well be right about this, Rob, but if this is necessary doesn't that sound like - to use the phrase again - a touch of the Naismiths? Obviously if Normann does go ahead I will trust Webber's judgement on the character of the player because Webber has a very good track record of these things, but at the moment it makes me nervous. As the deadline gets closer, the potential benefit-risk balance tilts towards risk (although I believe the deadline for signings from outside the UK goes beyond next Tuesday - am I right about this?)
Wasn't Normann himself quoted as saying he wasn't prepared to sign for us? Or was that just made up media nonsense too?
I didn’t see a direct quote for him, but it seems possible either way. I think it is unlikely any sensible footballer would actually say something like that publicly, as it wouldn’t be necessary.
From the proposed deal terms disclosed - I.e. a loan with an option to buy triggered by us staying up and him playing 50% of games plus - does not sound like a Naismith situation to me. And if what the Press are reporting is vaguely true, our board is essentially ensuring it is not a Naismith situation and will allow the deal to fall over to ensure that. We will only know, I suspect, if he signs and we get relegated. My feeling, though, is the club would rather not take the risk than have the positive of whatever he brings. Could be wrong.
What I find interesting about the Normann and Carvalho (and Billing) links are the style of player. Neither are a true DM in the Tettey, Sorensen, Skipp mould, both would be better played alongside a DM. Suggests we either think Gilmour* is that DM (questionable), or we're going to try and manage without one. *Perhaps Sorensen is that player, but I can't believe a DM under serious first team consideration would miss the first two games of the season, unless there were Covid/other effects we weren't told about.
Farke has come out several times saying that Sorensen was the worst effected by covid and it was taking him a lot longer to recover. It could simply be that he hasn’t been fit enough to play.
Which makes more sense with how Farke has set us up, to be honest. Interesting development the latest press reports saying it’s more likely we would take Carvalho on loan. That makes way more sense.
It's possible that DF sees Gilmour in the 'Regista' role as a deep playmaker in front of the defence in a 3 man midfield. Pirlo is the most famous example, but Carrick brought the role into English football. The regista is a creator rather than a DM, and takes the ball from the defence and either carries it forward or passes it forward to a player in space. Though he can also have a screening role, the defensive work falls more on the other 2 midfielders, who also cover for the FBs moving forward. https://www.google.com/search?q=reg...SYAQCgAQHIAQjAAQE&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp
