The boss returns to his home city having pledged to field a strong side against the team he supported as a boy.

But he knows the trip to Ibrox will also provide an opportunity for some summer signings and younger players to compete against a top side in what can be one of Europe's most intimidating arenas.

Dalglish told us: "For us it's important that our players, especially the new ones we've brought in who don't have a great deal of experience of playing football outside of England, to get a bit of an idea of what it's like to play somewhere else.

"It's not a big step, it's not too detached from England, but it's a wee bit of experience which could help us if we progress the way we'd like to progress as a football club.

"It'll be of great benefit to most of the players who haven't experienced it before. Everybody gains from playing teams in other leagues. You can't replicate a Champions League game against Rangers because neither of us are in it, but we go up and get an idea of what it might be like.

"We'll go up there with as strong a team as we possibly can.

"Obviously we've got to get an education for some of the players who've just come to the club and some of the younger ones in the club. But we'll go up to Glasgow and we know it'll be a competitive game and that'll be beneficial to everybody."

Despite the friendly tag, Dalglish is expecting a tough test against a club that currently has a seven-point lead over Motherwell at the top of the Scottish Premier League.

"Obviously it's a huge football club and you'd expect it to be a big attendance there," he said. "It's not as if it's a game where you're going to take it easy and be nice and casual. They're going to be well up for the game and so they should be.

"It might be termed a friendly but I think it'll be competitive.

"I was born in Glasgow and I know what to expect, and I know what their fans will expect from the Rangers team."
