(OT) I-Pad or I-Pad 2?

Looking for some advice. Our laptop is on its last legs so we're going to buy an I-Pad. I don't really know much about computers and so on, was wondering if anyone could advise me which is best?

Is it worth paying a bit more for the I-Pad 2 or will the older I-Pad 1 still do a good job? I probably only need a 16GB Wi-Fi model, not bothered about 3G as I'm only ever going to use it at home so the Wi-Fi is fine.

Regarding what we'll use it for, mainly going on the net (just basic stuff), a few games, and we'll transfer our I-Tunes library to it. We won't be doing anything fancy, just general everyday use.

So, is it worth spending a little bit more on the I-Pad 2 or do I save a few quid and go for the I-Pad 1. Don't know what the differences are.

Go for the iPad 2.

Apple drop technical support for older products quite quickly once a new model is released.

Not sure which are any good, seen a few by Samsung, Sony, Acer etc but not sure how they compare. People in shops just guide you to the most expensive things so gloss over the other options.

 

Neither support flash. Ipad 3 rumoured this quarter

 

The Samsung is good but Samsung have had to 'dumb down' certain aspects of the tablets performance after Apple forced them to.

The Sony is OK. The design is different and from users I know they are generally happy with it.

Not sure of the Acer.

Stay away from the BlackBerry PlayBook. It's dire.

HP actaully had a fairly decent tablet but recently opted to get out of the PC business and focus elsewhere. I picked up a HP Tablet for £90 (should have been £350+).

 

hm they use *basically* the same OS as the touch i believe?

May have to jailbreak one to test!

 

The Toshiba Thrive may be good for you if your looking at keeping it for home use and have a dock to play iTunes from?

Just buy an actual laptop, that way you get something cheaper and better rather than a coffee table ornament.

 

If you can find one , do what I did - 32gb HP Touchpad - £109!

Works a treat, Android for Touchpad is about to be released too.

 

Cheers for the advice everyone, a few things to think about. Going to do a little bit of looking about on the net. I'm off abroad next week for work so may save a few quid and buy something Duty Free (even though you don't save that much now).

 

We dropped our laptop in favour of an ipad 2 six months ago. Wouldn't think of going back (for day to day web-browsing). It's so good

 

I'm tempted to literally drop my laptop and see if the insurance will give me some money - no claims in 6 years and they still ramp the price up each year so I may as well try and get something out of them.

 

'Drop' it under a bus.

O2 wouldn't give me another battery and stated that the phone was fine even though the previous 2 batteries died within a week of usage.

Phoned the insurance peeps to see what they could assit with and they gave me the 'advice'.

Dropped it and called back with the terrible news. New phone 3 days later

We're getting rid of the laptop anyway as it's about 4 years old and pretty well used so it's worth trying. The mouse pad bit is a bit unresponsive and cracked so we probably couldn't sell it for much. If the insurers say no then we haven't lost anything. Even if they only give us £100 or something it'll be worth it.

 

I work for a company that sells iPads.

The main advantages of the iPad 2 over 1 are that it is lighter, thinner, has a Longer battery life and has a camera back and front for Facetime (video calls a bit like Skype). If you don't think these feature are worth the extra money then go for the iPad 1.

iPad 3 won't be coming out this year. Maybe the beginning of next year and won't support flash either (pet hate of Apple) so if you want to browse flash website then the iPad is not for you.

Getting iPad 2 for my missus for Xmas, is it worth getting the 3G? I've heard it's not as you can use your iPhone as a wifi hub and just use that if out & about. Can anyone confirm that for me?

 

Not sure but if you use you IPhone as a hub it cost £1 per day tethering charges, or so I have been told
