I Googled Virgin their supplier that informed them that their landline service will be made obscelite.

You can plug a digital phone into a laptop and use Skype but it's not a landline and the handsets my stepmother has used for years will no longer work after 2025.

Not sure if you keep your old expired landline number after 2025 ?

The point being she is a technophobe and will no longer be able to call people by landline on her existing equipment which is what I claimed.

Skype isnt a landline but you can use a digital phone with a landline
I dont see a problem with a "technophone" swapping an analog phone for a digital phone

 

I had a digital phone before but I dont know or care what I've got now
I will make sure I have a digital phone before the change unless I decide to make do with only a mobile phone

The same as her bill providers insisting that instead of paying her bills quarterly at the post office with cash and a paper bill she sets up a monthly direct debit instead.

Or her bank insisting that she has a contactless debit card and chip and pin instead of her bank book .

For me it isn't an issue but for someone in their 70s that has used this method for over 50 years it's a massive inconvenience.

Streamlining everything and digitalisation of the human existence is not designed for our convenience, the same with self service check outs .

are you sure that the bank requires a contactless debit card? which bank?
I would prefer suppliers incentivise customers to change their methods of payment

 

She has refused to have any plastic cards all her life , she gets a bus into town and withdraws whatever cash she needs .

The bank should have just told her to bring in her passport to withdraw money because I'm pretty sure you can still do that and she destroys the bank card .

She's a stubborn old duck but at the end of the day she has a fair wedge squirreled away and paranoid some unscrupulous ****er will gain access to her account and fleece her, it happens.

There are plenty of scammers
