I see that you have done your usual research – a quick bit of Google for a headline that suits your argument and not bothered to read it. Both articles are about business. Both articles are about how ISDN and PSTN technologies are being phased out.

There will still be landlines but new ones will not be copper wires. You should try looking at all those companies offering broadband – they are replacing old copper wiring to analogue phones with modern digital technologies. In the office, to make a phone call I put on a headset and use Skype or Teams to contact people who are online or I key in a phone number; but I could just plug in a digital handset instead.

Look out the window and you might see distribution poles with wires running to surrounding properties. The new digital cabling is likely to be underground. They can do away with the old X.25 packet switched technology most commonly used by businesses because the networks are being upgraded and data can be transmitted over the internet. Unless your stepmother is running a business, I doubt very much that she has expensive ISDN.

My mother’s house is served by Virgin Media. The cabling is under the street and enters the house through an ONT on the wall and they get their TV from Virgin as well as their telephone. Young people may not watch TV all day or phone their friends for a chat on landlines but old people do and Virgin will not be committing business suicide by doing away with all their residential customers.

You should try visiting Hull. Clearly it is more 21st Century than where you currently live. The whole of the city has fibre cabling. It is still a landline from A to B but fibre optic not copper. Once everyone has started using VoIP (Voice over IP – internet telephony) they will get their telephony through the same lines that carry their Netflix or Amazon Prime and allow them to surf the net. Plenty of people may decide to do away with the phone and just use mobile phones but they will still have a landline for their internet access and TV subscriptions. The local telecom company KCOM is expanding its fibre network across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. It will still be here in 2025, unless everyone is accessing the internet via telepathy or 5G nanobots.

When I first started in IT more than twenty five years ago, I worked for a company that did telecoms, so I know a little bit about it. Virgin Media started out by taking over what used to be Telewest, a cable TV operator that I had dealings with in one previous role – they were in Nottingham and Bristol at that time.

Business uses ISDN for telephony (which then routes into PSTN)

They are being switched off by 2025.
