Based on what? I agree, when he was here before, he was a better “keeper” than Burge as he was an ok premier league keeper. But his distribution was like mine and I probably can’t kick a ball 40 yards and it’s 7 years since he played for us. How long since he played in England? Better the devil you know maybe?
Off the top of my head last season.. 1-1 against hull at home, burge howler. 1-0 defeat away to Blackpool, burge howler. 1-1 against Bristol city, burge concedes ridiculous penalty. playoff semi final v Lincoln burge kicks it straight into their striker, leads to goal and possibly costs us promotion. So just off the top of my head, 4 games he directly cost us points in last season. Feel free to check the facts, you’ll probably find more that I’ve forgotten about whilst your there, Is that the verification you was after?
cant see why so much bickering if we can secure the services of a better keeper that will give us more chance of promotion whats the problem, as Prehab says if a better one becomes available we will probably do a deal, we will still keep Burge as reserve and send Patty out on loan for him to get lots of practice its win win for me.
So that's 5 points he lost us, still wouldn't have gotten us in to the top 2. The play off semi final had he not made the mistake but conceded the penalty he wouldn't have been at fault but we still would have been knocked out. Yes he's cost us points but how many has he saved us. I wish I had the time to go through every game and I'd bet there are at least 3 players who's mistakes have cost us more points than burge. I bet Wyke was one of them, with some of the sitters he missed. If you want to blame players who's mistakes have cost us points then 3 games in and McGeady has cost us 2 already yet Burge cost us 5 in a season
First game of the season three mistakes for the one goal Came flapped, then dropped it then fouled their player, pen His handling rubbish and his kicking is terrible. If we are wanting to play out from the back, its a disadvantage to have to have Burge play 10 yard passes as he can't play 30 yard ones. We have to sit our centre halves so deep. Preece has quite often talked about keepers' ability to play out with their feet in the articles he's written. Wonder if he's been advising LJ KS etc on the issues we face given the new style of play and Burge's ability. Burge's kicking ability comes from being able to hoof really far. Fine if your playing under Parky, not in this set up
Like I said, those examples were just off the top of my head. Theres plenty more, like you’ve just proved mate.
Over the moon if Burge is replaced like. Decent option as number 2 until his contract runs out, I suppose. Patterson out on loan.
After that we still had 70 minutes and only had two attempts on target, in fact 6 attempts, of any kind, in the whole game. That's over an hour to win a game that was level at kick off and level after 20 minutes. When Burge was injured he was obviously struggling but the defence didn't protect him and the manager didn't take him off. "Is that the verification you was after?" BBC "Burge, who had just received lengthy treatment for a head injury and would be substituted at half-time ... ... dropped a George Honeyman cross and Burke was on hand to tap in."
I'm answering them one at a time so it doesn't get complicated. I don't accept he cost us points in that game. So, what's your response to the first one?
He spilled a cross which directly led to hull scoring. If he doesn’t spill that cross, we win 1-0. So that’s 2 points dropped. If he was injured, he could have came off, he had the choice to do that but didn’t... It’s easy to come off after making a terrible mistake and blaming it an injury, so people like yourself fall for it. Ok, the penalty at home to Bristol rovers... What’s your view on that?
That's nonsense. There was nearly the entire match left to play during which time anything could've happed. If Hull don't score, in that attack, it would've changed the subsequent chain of events during which we might not have scored. As I've said Sunderland had over an hour to win those two extra points and failed because they only managed two on target attempts. The whole team dropped two points, trying to attribute that to a goalkeeper is ridiculous. From the BBC report ... "after the restart Charlie Wyke clipped wide a Max Power cross from inside six yards." Did Wyke cost us two points by failing to score?
The biggest problem for burge is he is a goalkeeper so when he makes a mistake it will probably end in conceding a goal. However every other player on the pitch probably make more mistakes every game than Burge but they go unnoticed because where they are on the pitch. If burge had been at fault for the goal last night he would have been slated, yet there were at least 2 players that cost us 3 points by their mistakes of missed chances. The view of that was that we played really well and should have won if we'd taken our chances which I agree with. The point I'm making is if it had been Burges mistake that cost us he would have been ripped apart on here. I've said before if it hadn't been for all the injuries we got at the end of the season especially to sanderson I think we would have been promoted, so I honestly believe with the squad we have, if we don't get another keeper we will still go up
and like Ive said mate this discussion is all to no avail, if we are signing Mannone who is a better keeper, i am very happy with the signings we have made and we will be stronger than last year .By how much remains to be seen once all the new faces have had a chance to bed in,but the way we are going at the moment, and with the new faces yet to sign, what a time to be a Sunderland fan
In that particular match vs Hull he makes a great point blank save at around the 1 minute mark of this video so it could be argued that he saved us a point and cost on of our rivals 2.
It's always been the case that keepers are under greater scrutiny for their cock ups than outfield players, always has been and always will be. It's not like it's something that has been invented just to criticise Burge. It's probably because keepers have less to do so you expect them to be able to do the basics.
