So are they hard line religion with Russia and China pushing them, Saudi/Pakistan puppets or just a group that want to end tribal leaders forming their own army's and being in perpetual feud?

A mixture. The Taliban aren't a monolith, any more than our government is.

It was women protesting and holding the flags. Saw it on the news earlier. Don't know for sure it was women killed, but that was the suggestion earlier.

    Implied/suggestions don't always match reality.
Don't take this wrong i have seen nothing of this but seem to know as much as you without speculation.

Unfortunately, as usual, the bullshit is spewing from the opposite direction.
    1. I do have knowledge of this - direct from contacts and ex-colleagues still in senior UK, EU and US diplomatic circles.
    2. The UK Government was caught flat-footed and failed to recognise the immediacy of the developing situation. Not just a failure of intelligence but a failure of HM Government to be able to deal with multiple scenarios.

The fact that this latest omnishambles has befallen Johnson comes as no surprise to anyone, least of all many Tory politicians.

I've known a fair few people that served in Afghanistan and thank goodness they are all back relatively intact. However my heart goes out to those who lost loved ones, many of whom must be thinking "what was it all for?"

There are many military tenets, and some of the most important are the "Principles of War". These are drummed into officers at all levels of their career. However one of them is regarded as far more important than all the others. This is called:

Selection and Maintenance of the Aim

I think it's fair to ask after the Afghanistan experience, what the aim actually was and how well did we and other countries maintain it?
