Clearly you only bothered to read the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry to the point where it states “about 30%”. You did not get as far as the Prognosis section that starts: “The mortality rate from variola minor is approximately 1%, while the mortality rate from variola major is approximately 30%.” One strain is more deadly than the other. In the last European outbreak, 35 of the 175 people infected died – 20 per cent. Reading the history of smallpox, death rates varied enormously in different parts of the world as some indigenous peoples were more susceptible than others. It is reported that mortality amongst Native Americans and Aztecs was as high as 90 per cent, estimated.
