If we were waiting to see how he got along in Tott's first team, that question has now been answered.
I know it's not comparing apples with apples, but this Cahill rumour does give me the Naismiths a bit.
We are leaving it a bit late , most decent players have signed new deals or moved to their new club . We are going to be linked with over priced 35 year old journeymen out of contract on massive wages, or we will be put over a barrel desperately trying to sign someone who the selling club is reluctant to lose. My gut feeling is a young loan signing and converting one of our midfielders to the Skipp role.
But any contract would be for 1 year only. We would not be left with an Albatross around our neck. At 35 he should still be fit enough to be fully competitive. His experience, especially in the middle of a back three, could be decisive.
Would be a very good signing and with his good organisational and aerial abilities, you never know we might even become less suspect from set pieces !
You're probably right and it's not a massive risk if limited to one season, but it doesn't scream of a DF/SW signing. We've farmed out Famewo and i'm not aware of any other CBs who were close to the 1st team set up. Sounds like we don't have much in the way of options.
I was disappointed that we let Famewo go out before settling this issue, particularly as he's our only left-footed CB. Around that time we moved on and before long were told by the Pinkun that SW had exhausted his list of CBs. If we end up with 5 new attacking players and a CM but no new CB or DM, this window will be an overall failure. I hope that doesn't happen, but I fear it might. Here's the Pinkun on Cahill: https://www.pinkun.com/sport/norwic...umours-ex-england-defender-considered-8238052
There's a comment on that article suggesting Ethan Ampadu, who would be an interesting choice. A second Chelsea loanee is allowed I think(?), and he can play CB or DM. He mostly featured as a CB for Sheffield United last season (which may not be a ringing endorsement!). Edit: No, the limit is one player per season from a single club, so Gilmour rules out Ampadu.
Clearly Famewo isn't seen as a viable option in which case it's irrelevant that he's a CB or left footed. He needed to go. Hopefully it'll work out for him and the club. Not everyone of our youth projects or our transfers is going to work out how we hope it will. I want to see another CB & DM as much as anyone else, but not at any cost. It's not like the club hasn't been trying.
Sorry, I left out the 'other' in 'only other'. If Gibson is injured, though, a right footed CB will struggle against PL opposition, conceding too many corners because of the difficulty clearing balls with his left foot. Gibson has made a big difference in that regard.
Look on the bright side Rick. As far as I'm aware, no team has ever previously won the Championship three times in a row
Yes, he didn't take his chance and since then he's hardly set the world on fire in league 1. What makes you think suddenly he's good enough now for the PL. You might wish it so, but he ain't. We have 4 CB's plus Soresson who would appear to be ahead of him in the queue. Why would we keep him, just to mess up his chances and ours of moving him on. Some times things don't happen just cause we wish them so. We've moved on from 2 years ago, unfortunately it doesn't appear he's developed enough to stay with us.
That seemed to be the case, reading between the lines. It doesn't really suggest a wholehearted commitment to me. Glad we at least sounded him out though. As for Skipp, the EDP certainly thinks it's time to move on: "But Norwich must move on and have done. There will be a list as long as your arm somewhere at Colney of ‘Skipp alternatives’. Whether that involves taking up that remaining loan spot remains to be seen as there are other areas the club wishes to strengthen before August 31."
Random name to throw out there: Kean Bryan. 24 year old CB who made 18 appearances towards the end of last season for Sheffield United. Currently a free agent, with rumoured talks with Boro not amounting to much yet. Annoyed Sheffield United by giving the impression that he'd sign a new deal, then not doing so. Suspicion is he didn't want to admit he wanted to leave, as they probably would have stopped playing him in the Premier League. Good age, Prem experience, and a free agent. Never seen him play so can't say a lot more. You'd hope a Man City youth product wasn't terrible on the ball...
Interesting DH - according to Transfermarkt he's a left footed CB who can also play as a DM. Agree about the ManCity pedigree and he could be very interesting.
'To give someone the Naismiths'. I think we should make this an official NCFC idiom for when we are scared that our football club is about to do something really stupid.
