Aye on the 2nd July Biden was saying as much. He defo underestimated it. And that has to be down to the advice he was given.
Yeah. Thought I'd heard that figure 2-3 months. Thing is mate, Taliban rules or whatever they are called, don't affect men, it only affects women, so unless the Afghan man is proven to have helped the enemy, they probably don't give two shhites, as long has they walk away with their life.
I understood that he was advised to leave the bare minimum in place, and chose to withdraw all troops
It's how they operate though mate. Every single group out there operates the same way. Sink away, watch what happens, let the opposition take territory. Then organise and start the guerilla war. Where I agree is on the role of the Afghan army, but I wonder just how well trained and equipped they are. Only one group I've heard actually engaged in battle against the Taliban over the past week. Some sort of special forces which were the best trained... but what the British General I was listening to (forget the name) said the driving force for that was they knew if they got captured they'd be executed so they were bound to fight to the death. The other regular Afghan army I don't know about tbh. I think there was no coordinated leadership or response but that's just a feeling, nothing other than that.
Maybe it's a deliberate American ploy to fook up the region. If they engage in civil war, they will be too busy bothering anyone else. Crass way of saying it, but only way I can express what I think they might be up to.
It's weird he's pulled out completely (although I read that CIA operatives and certain special forces remain on the ground for intelligence purposes only). He could've left an aircraft carrier and planes to safeguard the country from the air. I heard somewhere that there are currently more U.S. troops in Japan than there were in Afghanistan when Biden took over.
Without doubt there will special forces on the ground there. But to so visibly pull all forces out of the county when it was inevitable what would happen, is baffling.
Two things; Firstly most people cheered at the thought of Biden taking over from Trump, but he's proven he's just as callous. Second thing, America only cares about Americans, see the first point again.
Just listening to a prog on the radio where Biden has said that Trump had struck a deal with the Taliban to withdraw all troops and if he’d gone back on it, they would have attacked what few troops were actually left. I suppose Biden could have sent MORE troops in, but it seems like it was a path that had been set before he came into office. That said. It still seems incredibly negligent to just pull all troops out.
Biden and Trump will blame one another, to me they are both of the same mould, they didn't care. They each will tried to hide behind their politics, the fact remains, either one could have changed course during their time in office. Biden knew if he tried to change the course, and American soldiers got killed, it would be a vote loser, and he's more worried about votes, then lives. America have always fooked up whatever they touch, problem is they are a population five times the size of us, with weaponary we could never match or afford. We could go with some EU states, but didn't the French pull out in 2012? I'm not sure where Germany, Spain, Italy or any of the other countries stand on this, I assume we would have to go it alone, but Afghanistan is a country three times the size of us, with roughly around three quarters of the same size population. Would the British taxpayer even be happy to pay for us standing alone. It don't bother me, I don't have to live with the consequences, whatever we decide. But we're hated enough around the world, and I'm sure the Taliban have no love loss for us, so i'd say stay out.
Yep, between them both, they’ve made a proper ****ing hash of it. As for the Taliban, I don’t think they give a **** about the UK. They are busy trying to forge diplomatic relations with Russia and China to cement their place as a legitimate govt.
Can you imagine us taking on the Russians and Chinese, might as well stick us in the detention centres now.
Biden has/had a lad who served in military and Trump doesn't. Biden for a long time was against this and has pushed through the withdrawal that Trump started. Trump even patting himself on the back for the reduction in troops posted overseas. It's a mess.
Biden could have stopped this, he chose not to, let's not hide behind the politics of he said, she said. This is the problem, one side always wants to blame the other. Biden had the power to stop it... https://www.theguardian.com/comment...dens-defeat-and-it-may-come-back-to-haunt-him
I suppose it goes back to the question of what where we doing there in the first place? Bin Laden got killed, and Al Qaeda brought down. Why did we decide to spend 20 years and approx. 1 trillion dollars trying to ‘westernise’ a country which probably has little appetite for it? The US could have left extra military there for a few more months. But then what? Looking at the reports, it was inevitable that as soon as the west pulled out, the Taliban would reclaim control. Apparently a large majority of the Afghan army can’t even read, yet the US has left them to opearate and maintain high tech military weapons and defence systems. It would be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic. My opinion for what it’s worth: Stop getting involved in other countries ****. Or if you are going to interfere, at least do it across the board. A lot of press coverage has been about women’s rights etc now that the Taliban are back in town. Right fair enough then, when do we begin the invasion of Saudi Arabia, Qatar etc?
