I could be wrong but I believe since Farke joined us we have only signed 3 first team centre backs Franke Zimmermann and Gibson. Franke was an absolute bomb scare and waste of money Zimmermann was free but good until his injury at West Ham and Gibson was a risk after being frozen out by Burnley for 2 seasons but the gamble paid off. Carroll would spend more time on the injured list than playing. We already have one long term injury in Byram. Jarvis hardly played a game for us another long term injury. We have made too many mistakes with strikers in the past so please not another one!

Starting players who are not fully recovered from injury or match fit is not very good preparation for the season with arguably the toughest 4 games to start . If I could predict this weeks ago that we need a new centre back possibly 2 then the super smart number crunchers and data analysts at Colney should have seen this coming. I don't want to be that miserable git that's always complaining and even If we have to play Gunny as centre back I'll be getting behind them but . It was our failure to recruit decent central defenders that destroyed any chance of survival last time round and here we are again down to the bones before the season even begins . We are not expected to win any of the first 4 games, Hanley has to play his first game back at some point, might as well build his match fitness in the games we aren’t expected to win. I understand the concern Dunc but any defensive signing in our price bracket wont be a massive improvement enough to make us contenders to beat any of those first 4 teams.
Well IF we recruited one or two when the window opened they would at least have got to train with their new team . It will take any new players a few weeks or even months to settle in and at this stage most squads are settled and we could end up over paying or panic buying . We aren't expected to win those first 4 games but 4 drubbings with half fit players could shatter the confidence.

I think it may depend on how seriously DF is considering a 3 at the back option, as Cahill would be a good option as the central CB.
