Was a very good goal. But some are saying its the goal of the decade? Is this just beacause its Rooney?

Erm, not even goal of the month for me. Tiotes? (ok some i'm biast).

Actually i think Rooneys against us at OT was better.

    THoughts?

I think the sheer technique required for that OH kick makes it very special but i don't actully think its better than the ridiculous volley he scored against us many years ago.

He was arguing with the referee and turned to see the ball dropping invitingly, he ran at it and smashed a first time volly into the top corner round the out stretched hand of shay given which actually had the top corner spot cover to a point where it looked impossible. It was so good because he hadn't even been paying attention to what was happening then just saw his chance and BOOM.

that being said for a striker whose not in form and was having a bad afternoon to pluck that from nowhere goes to show you what you should really be getting for £35m.

Carroll will never be capable of anything like that. thats what i'd expect for that kind of money.

Yep, it was a magnificent goal, but Crouch has scored several like that in the last decade. Bale's is goal of the season for me (the one against Stoke?) ridiculous piece of skill. Then Rooney's goal yesterday, with Johan Elmander's goal against Wolves rounding off the top three.

Goal of the decade should go to either Hammit Altentop (the goal that won the Puskas Award) or this one, that came second:

I seem to recall nile ranger scoring a ridiculous volley for the reserves a year or two ago. certainly not the best goal ever but it was so good that the chronicle did an article about it with a video showing it. if anybody has ever seen it they certainly wouldn't accuse him of being a bad finisher...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-1K8k-K79A

Start it at 2m:15secs in for the goal.

At least when Sky want to "big up" Rooney, they will keep showing this goal and not keep showing the one that he scored against us. (which I think was a better goal)

Elmander against Wolves is goal of the season but that Rooney strike was unbelievable. The pace of the cross and the power and accuracy he struck it with make it so special, there have been others who have scored similar goals (Crouch has been mentioned) but his lack the power of this one. Plus Crouch never gets any credit for anything he does!

Scored goals like that for fun when I was a kid, but the only time I got any praise during a game from the sports master was when I dropped back and used the same technique to make a clearance.

I remember lobbing the keeper from 60 yards for walker boys U15's in 1995.
I managed to keep myself grounded and not let it go to my head though.

    It was alright.

I've seen it a few times now and it's not as good as Pele in 'Escape to Victory'

If it had come off his foot rather than the middle part of his shin, I would rate it higher

Not only did Pele score a great goal in " Escape to Victory ", he showed himself to be the master of disguise. Who else could mix with the locals in occupied Paris wearing a cloth cap and an overcoat and go unnoticed.
