    Afternoon Lads,

After seeing the Spurs game on Sunday which i thought showed once again how far we have come defensively up to this point, I was thinking about how badly we use to defender and some of the complete rubbish we had in our defence over the past seasons.

To most other fans seeing Newcastle United with a decent defense is a shock to them.

I just hope it continues and credit goes to Pardew & the backroom staff for making our defence in to one of the meanest so far this season.

Although our defence will be really tested with the 3 fixtures of Man City, Man Utd & Chelsea at home in a row.

Generally though extremely pleased with the partnership of Colo & Taylor now even though Taylor really annoyed me with that penalty for Spurs.

Yeah, very solid. Imagine it when Santon starts playing regular games at right back and we get a good left back like Cissokho in. Krul inbetween the sticks and Tiote, Cabaye making it solid in the centre of the pitch - we would keep clean sheets every game!

On the penalty against Spurs - I think it was just one of those things, Cabaye caught on the ball and if Tayls didn't bring him down it would have been a goal

At least Saylor didn't grip his chest, drop to the floor and convulse a bit whilst trying to con the ref that he was having a heart attack. He's stopped the old sniper routine since gun restrictions were tightened and refs became aware of his 'technique'.

I have to say that even I'm still surprised at our defensive solidity so far this season.

    It's not natural... is it?

It's tall, broad and strong. Trouble is, it's not deep. Got to hope that Colo and Taylor stay healthy and unsuspended

I think if we concede six or less goals in those three fixtures we can safely say our defence has improved, been really impressed with them so far (even Raylor! <yikes>).

Pretty much agree with most of all you said but I personally don't think it would have been a goal, i thought tayls could have tried to stay with him and shrugged him further away from goal but your right Cabaye's mistake put him in a bad position.

Nobody cares about Cabaye's mistake though. Early on in Tiote's career he made a horrible mistake against Blackburn at home. He turned out to be the buy of the summer!

I agree with you, I am still more than suprised how well our defense has done considering we didnt even have a natural LB playing!! Its far from natural my friend but who are we to mind:)

Exactly! We've almost had enough of good ol' Shay having to bail out the likes of Dabizas, Boumsong, Bramble......for once we have a solid backline that can actually keep opponent attacks quiet!

I think our recent defencive excellences have as much to do with Tiote (and now Cabaye) protecting them from runs from midfield. I always felt we were weak when the opposition actually ran at us, they have negated that threat.

I have concerns over Taylor, in general this season he has inproved massively his positioning has come up trumps however a clanger is always around the corner we were
lucky that wolves were not awarded a penalty cos of another mistake.
i love what taylor brings to the team his passion is superb but he needs to get these mistakes sorted.
ref Santon i thought he was signed to replace Judas jose at lb???
Ryan taylor was at fault for the second goal and if it was a natural left sided player defoe's shot would/should have been blocked.
on a plus its been the best defensivley we have been for a long time

Thats what we expect from Taylor now, but wouldn't really say was his fault - he got put in a bad position from Cabaye's bad pass
