Little bit about Providence before he went to Roma. Looks a *very* Saints type signing. https://www.chiesaditotti.com/2019/7/30/20746383/roma-signs-psg-prospect-ruben-providence
We had a very good sweeper many years ago called Reuben. 1983-84 was (and remains) Southampton’s best ever season in terms of final positions (runners-up in the top-flight and FA Cup semi-finalists) and Reuben Agboola played in 39 games that season (33 in the league and 6 in the FA Cup), mainly in the sweeper role, winning the best away player award.
https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/19511735.amp/?__twitter_impression=true Not sure if this has been posted already but Obafemi now being linked with Bournemouth. Seems a much better prospect for him personally. A better club with more chance of promotion and he won't have to relocate far/at all either.
Yes, it wasn't enough for Lawrie to break our hearts dumping us for Sunderland but then he raided his old club to take Ruben away from us in his prime.
I would be interested to know how much our wage bill has gone down. I reckon it must be at least £200,000 a week. We lost some high wage earners. Those who have come in can't be on the same money.
Difficult to know as we aren’t sure how much of Hoedt, Lemina, Ely and Long’s salaries were covered by their loans. Because some have gone and some have come back and not been shifted. So it might not be as much as we would hope
I don't think Celtic (22K avg p/w) Lazio (21K) while Bompey are in the Champ, would be paying us too much of player's wages who are on +60K and who are hardly loan coups. Our average wage is 44K p/w. I would imagine we would still be paying the lion's share.
In that case we might have saved a fair amount. I fully expect long to go out on loan on deadline day. As for Ely - no idea. From what I read he still looked relatively useless in pre season I don’t think he gets in our match day squad unless there is at least one attacking injury if not two. He isn’t going to start and he isn’t a game changing sub
I know it’s not necessarily what people like to hear but credit is due for clearing the decks of so many albatross contracts, especially in the event we do end up going down while we’re owned by an individual who hasn’t - and won’t - inject his own wealth.
He looked very useful indeed. If he was a new signing, I think fans would be quite excited. Unfortunately some will not give him his a chance on account of his first season here.
