I worked in Newcastle for 5 years and this doesn't surprise me at all. They'll claim anything not nailed down as theirs and if they can't claim it they'll run it down. For years when Nissan was doing well or getting good praise it was "North East car plant", when Nissan was under threat it was "troubled Sunderland car plant". They are a myopic, self absorbed and parochial bunch.
