2-1 loss. Concede penalty in the last minute. I have a feeling this will be a very long and not very enjoyable season. So two of Barton’s new men - one gets sent off the other concedes a penalty in the last minute when we were hanging on for a point. Great lads. Well done.
I think it is time to stop calling yourselves supporters of the Gas. All u want to do is moan, Yes we lost, yes we did not seem to be on the attacking side for much of the game and it was our FIRST of the season. I am not a keen supporter of the current manager as i feel he is a bad example to many, although I would not be surprised if he is found not guilty of the charges, that is if ,.and when they are brought. I did not see the game, I listened to the radio along with watching cricket on tv. Why can so called supporters not put an effort into the hope for a good season rather than the current diatribe that seem to be common amongst many I feel that you want to 'trade backwards' have some hope and let the playerss hear it next week
Nah - that’s nonsense. I’ve supported Rovers for 40 years so if I want to criticise the team when they lose then I will do so, whether you approve or not. I’m the first to applaud us when we’re playing well and when we’re giving it our all but I’m not a blinkered happy clapper who will remain silent when the team fails. Under this manager we have been consistently ****. He’s won three times out of 19 attempts and the same old problems of shooting ourselves in the foot from last season have been carried over into this season’s opening game. Nothing gives me more pleasure than watching Rovers win but that’s been in very short supply since December 2019. If he turns it around next game or the one after that then I’ll give the necessary applause and credit to him and the team - but don’t tell me I’m not allowed to be called a BRFC fan because I criticise when we fail. That’s arrogant drivel.
I am not against criticism, in fact that is always needed through good and bad. I am against the certain people on these threads who are writing us off already, after one match, They have been in this frame of mind since we were relegated last season. As mentioned I am not a supporter of our manager, not because of last season as he was on a hiding to nothing after the previous two.
I wouldn’t say that I’m writing us off by any means - I think we have a competitive squad for this level. However, if we fail to learn from the mistakes which were so evident last season then we’re in for a tough 2021-22. After Harries scored a cracker to put us back in it we self-destructed yet again - our captain getting himself needlessly sent off in an off the ball incident and then experienced Hughes giving away a penalty in the last minute. That’s exactly the kind of thing that got us relegated last season (along with just three goalscoring attempts over 90mins) so to see it happening on the first game of the new season with new personnel is incredibly frustrating. I desperately want to see us do well and you’re right, it’s far too early to write us off, but the manager needs to stop these stupid mistakes which are costing us. Unfortunately, I don’t think he has it in his character to do so.
Bluebaldee, going by years ago last comment, I think it's more aimed at me, even though I haven't commented on yesterday's game. Reason why I think he is on about me is the fact that I am the one who has written off our season already before the season started. I am the one who is also negative about most things Rovers right now and I understand why I could frustrate others with my view. I have posted a few times in different threads about the way I am feeling about the lose of love towards Rovers and mainly towards football in general. I won't repeat those reasons in full as it's there to see but I will briefly say that the club as a whole from top to bottom feels completely unidentifiable TO ME. It's like I've woken up with amnesia and I have been told I am a mad gashead but I see absolutely nothing that would explain why im a mad gashead. This feeling exasperated even more when Barton became manager and all the baggage that brought. Everything about him goes against my values. Everything what he says irritates the hell out of me taking no accountability for himself and blames everyone and everything and even if you take his baggage away, I just don't rate him as a manager. While he is manager, I can't get excited about signings or our chances with the squad as I don't trust Barton to manage them. There is nothing positive about this club FOR ME to show anything positive or enthusiasm and since his arrival, it's only made me fall out of love for football even more. So yeah, I am all doom and gloom. I am a negative bastard right now about Rovers but that is mainly due to how I feel about football and Barton made it worse. So I am sorry if this brings you down years ago or anyone else. The only thing at the moment that is keeping me going really is loyalty to this place and the relationships I've built up with total strangers here! I will try and tone it down year ago as I get what you are say but the way I feel in general, I can't see much else to say or comment on as literally everything is negative. I understand the sentiment of having faith but it's hard to get faith with you dislike the manager s much with so much passion as a person and manager. I have no faith so it's hard to express faith here.
Just watched the match action on the Rovers page didn't seem to show the sending off incident but looking at the penalty I think Rovers should have had a free kick as the player who won the penalty was holding the defender not the other way around.
The sending off was harsh because their player elbowed Coutts in the chest first. Coutts should have ignored it completely, but there was a bit of a retaliation and that was enough for a pretty soft sending off. The penalty seemed like the right decision, although again, their player seemed to be grappling with our player just as much as our player was grappling with him. The holding on thing gets punished sometimes and not at other times, but it must be safer not to hold onto the opponent. Barton's comments weren't helpful because he came across as a bit of a victim, which doesn't sound good coming from a manager. If we keep losing games by a narrow margin due to dodgy refereeing decisions like last season, he might have a point, but then we probably don't need him as a manager.
You're spot on here! At best, Coutts was naive in retaliating like he did, and you'd have hoped his experience should have taught him better, instead of falling for the bait that was laid. Yes it was ball breaking to be denied a deserved point like we were, and with football being football, I'm sure it wont be the only time this season that we either win a game in the dying seconds or lose one like this. We've just got to hope that things even out over the season and we benefit as often as we lose out. I know they say these things even themselves out, but to be honest, I'm not sure that they always do! I agree that Joey needs to be careful he doesn't alienate referees as whether he's justified or not, it will only come back to bite us, and we are quite capable of making life difficult for ourselves on our own, without winding up the officials to make things even tougher for us. To be so close to gaining a point in our opening game, with a weakened and new team, at a difficult opponents ground, looked like being a good opening result for us for a change, but we should have known fate and our inability to see a game out would conspire to kick us in the nuts as usual!
The wife met an ex work friend who with her partner was up at Mansfield and the general comment was that the game wouldn't end until Mansfield had retaken the lead
Tonight's line up Belshaw, Taylor, Anderton, Kilgour, Baldwin Westbrooke, Grant, Liddle Saunders, Thomas, Anderson Subs Ward, Harries, Budd, Hoole, Jones, Spence, Langlais
Following the game on live? text 7 minutes gone and the only entry is the game begins FGR beating city 1 - 0 1 shot in the first 25 minutes by either side Have Rovers had a shot at goal yet According to sky Cheltenham have had 8 shots to our 1 84% passing success and 54,2% possession Rovers 0 - 1 Cheltenham Alfie May
This game seems to be all Cheltenham and we don't seem to have any ideas on how to get shots away or get into attacking positions to threaten their goal Sercombe and Vassell on Perry and May off About 18 minutes to go losing 1 - 0 time to put the subs on unless they are all playing that badly he doesn't know who to change 0 - 2 to Cheltenham Goodnight Irene and goodbye Carabao cup
52.7% possession, 4 shots none on target, Cheltenham had 6 corners to our 1, we only won 66.7% of our tackles to their 90.9%. In competitive matches we have scored 1 goal and conceded 4. Barton wanted to bring in his own players which he has done, so either they are not good enough or our manager and coaching staff are not good enough. This needs to be sorted very quickly we are making mistakes in defence and conceding goals, we do not appear to be creating good chances and if we are there is no one who appears to be capable of finding the net and if this is not sorted quickly then the only way is down
Can't argue with any of this - it may be early days, and the cup game this evening wasn't important in the scheme of things, but once again its the manner in which we are getting beaten - the old adage from last season hasn't gone away I'm afraid, if you don't score goals, you wont win matches. All we can do is hope, pray and persevere!!
Todays line up Jaakkola, Hughes, Grant, Finlay, Thomas, Hargreaves, Anderton, Anderson, Saunders Harries, Hoole Subs Belshaw, Kilgour, Collins, Nicholson, Baldwin, Liddle, Rodman Lines playing Daly on the bench
JB said there could be in's and out's no Westbrooke today is he moving on???? Nicholson on for Finley and Rodman for Thomas Collins on for Saunders Daly on for Stevenage Chris Lines scores for Stevenage 0 - 1 another goal from a corner kick Norris scores their 2nd 0 - 2
3 Matches 3 defeats 1 goal scored 6 conceded Wail says that promotion is a priority this season. If we keep JB with his record at the Rovers we will be in the National league next season. He wanted to bring in his players and he has but we do not appear to have any more idea of how to defend than we had last season I know many are predicting a long season but at this rate of going our fate will be decided before the end of January 2022 and it wont be pleasant
