Interesting, because when they show Aussie soldiers assisting the Aussie police on TV, the news commentators go to the trouble of emphasising that the soldiers are unarmed and just helping with the workload. I guess that means they are having a lot of trouble persuading the descendants of convicts to observe Lockdown as Australia continues on its 100 year quest for Zero Covid: just 98 years to go.
That's bonkers. It's back to front. The squaddies are trained in gun use, the plod are lightly trained in enforcing the law, but have the full back up of the legal system and probably get minimal training in gun use beyond knowing how to point it at a target, and a rough understanding of the guidelines on when to use it. I know some paddies are liable to disagree, but I'd rather the squaddie had the gun, and plod had their warrant card.
