Which football league stand outs immediately come to mind for you? To be honest if you don’t shoot you don’t score . And some of our players have had certain riskier aspects coached out it seems (Djenepo for example) . Whether doing the same with him is good or not remains to be seen
He has a very similar record to Jordan Rhodes when Rhodes was in his early/mid 20s. I can’t recall Rhodes ever getting an opportunity in the PL but if he did he must’ve failed
He wasn’t given an opportunity at the point he was scoring all the goals. He went up with Boro and they signed a bunch of other attackers without giving him a chance not disputing the general claim btw. Just interested by who you meant
I think Bamford and Watkins have shown that the step up from Championship to Premier League is actually getting smaller, especially when playing the lower half teams. I think signing too championship players is a really good strategy for a club our size - so I am looking forward to seeing how he gets on.
Rhodes, Hooper, McCormack, Sessagnon, Mitrovic, Vydra. All failed to replicate their form in the PL. Watkins obviously made the move up in a big way last year and Lambert didn’t look out of place for us. It’s come off for some players but others haven’t. Just like any signing really.
Rhodes was never given a chance to replicate his form in the PL. I think he may well have been priced out by Venky’s at the time when he was really on top form. He played 6 games in the PL but was replaced before being given a chance . Likely because he wasn’t good enough but there is insufficient evidence to make that claim Ross McCormack has never played a premier league game. So no way of knowing Gary Hooper’s record was in the SPL not the championship Which Sessegnon? Neither are strikers Mitrovic and Vydra fair enough.
Blackburn fans saying his main weapon is his pace. Him and Tella might scare the bejeezus out of defenders.
The BBC text feed suggests the fee is 20m plus add ones. Which is very different from “will not exceed 15m” including add ons
I'd be pretty surprised if we paid £20m, imo that is at least 5m too much, however we did need to bring strikers in. So if we have paid £20m then it is what it is. We wouldn't have paid that if it was going to push us over the edge finanically. Didn't BBC say it was £25m for Ings too when it was actually £30m. So not sure they are that accurate with these things.
Yes I think they are wrong on this. Normally I’d say they like to try and make the fees as big as possible. But they went the other way with Ings
The quoted fees always depend on which side is giving them to the press. I read that the fee for Ings was £25m up front, with £5m add ons. Hence the Villa side leaked it being £25m and Saints side were claiming £30m. This transfer is probably similar, but it's unlikely we'll ever know exactly how much.
Yeah, there isn't any particular formula for success there. Guys that can work chances for themselves tend to do better than the guys who are more reliant on crosses/goalmouth poaching, because PL defenders are much better at snuffing those out, which is a mark in Armstrong's favour. But guys that finish at a high rate tend to step up better than those who are reliant on getting a boatload of chances, which is a mark against. I'm fairly iffy, but that's hardly a guarantee of failure. It again looks like we'll be much better off playing at a very high tempo, though...people mention Bamford, and one of the reasons he has thrived is that Leeds specializes in creating open space, more than he had even in the Championship. With Armstrong(s) and Tella and Adams et al, we'd probably be best-served doing similar. We aren't the most technically-gifted squad, but we do have plenty of pace.
