Thought i'd start a thread specifically relating to our lack of fullbacks and how ridiculous it is that the club hasn't recognised this and signed 27 of them so we ensure we have depth in the squad

I'm relaxed about this particular window but I have to say that it is a bit ridiculous how little interest the club has had in signing LBs and RBs in recent years. It's been like the position doesn't really matter and there's no need to bother because other players can fill in.

I'm sure the new boys will finally rectify the problem however.

Thank heavens, it'll stop every other thread being infected with 'no full backs' as if it's breaking news or the club hadn't noticed.

Signing very good players is always more difficult than bringing in what we're used to ...

... or perhaps a couple of unknowns, from Scotland, would just satisfy everyone.

It’s ultimately going to cost us points. Wigan targeted us down the left on Saturday and it paid off for their first goal. Needs addressing by Saturday.

This. There's no excuses for it. We could have swooped in for that lad who transferred from Dunston to Seaham Red Star. He's a right back and we have none at the club.

It's just one failure after another with our recruitment team.

    Ultimately we won.
    And thats what matters.
Hopefully we address any issues as soon as possible.
Up to now I'm a happy chappy.
    Good start to the season.
    Big crowd.
Beat a team expected to do well.
3 of our ex players in their squad.
    Good new signings in ours.
    Positive attacking football.
    Excellent.

    Oh and the suns out.
Is it raining over you ? ;) :)

look, I can see both sides of the argument, commenting on where we are now with no full backs is not a problem. Yes the club are aware of it and are trying to bring in quality. But there are no guarantees, if those quality players aren't available through no fault of Sunderland, what will they do? Play midfielders there till January and check if the quality becomes available or buy into a League One full back. Therein lies the dilemna for me, hopefully it wont come to that, but i think we will opt for the former.
What I will say though, I know its early days, but if they are of the quality of Evans and Doyle, then they will be doing something right at this level.

i still think the club will get it right, have to admit to a wee bit of a 'worry' after supposedly having another LB lined up after pulling out of one deal and still nothing...think i said at the time 'a bird in the hand' and it was not as if that 'bird' had no feathers...also, we are past the date for hume to decide so we might even end with less options than we have now.

ok, that is the negative side out of the way so no need for many others to repeat the same stuff, on a more positive note, i think we have all seen how the new recruits have settled into the squad (i think pritchard will slot in just as easily) and how well they are playing, therefore i have no problem right now waiting for similar for the back line.

Exactly, LJ has stated it’s quality over quantity this time round and as you say up to now the signings look promising.

Completely relaxed about it here. Pleased we're no longer the dumping ground for everyone else's ****e. We might have to go without for a season to prove the point. In which case, stick the U23s in.

The Cirkin lad (LB) rumoured to be coming in from Spurs is meant to be very good. They've allegedly asked for both a buyback and sell-on clause in his contract so clearly Spurs hierarchy rate him too. Bodes well.

As long as the buy back fee is ridiculously high or the clause is 'first option to buy'. Otherwise it could be like a glorified loan move.

Not that we are in any position of strength with this sort of deal, at the moment. A decent sell on fee would seem adequate, though.
