    Competition - EFL Cup
    Stage - Round 1
Venue - Select Car Leasing Stadium
    Date - 10 August 2021
    Kick Off - 8:00pm

Following their opening day of the season defeat away at Blackburn Rovers, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea Squad is a League Cup match at Championship rivals Reading.

On Saturday, Ben Brereton's second-half penalty turned out to be the match-winning moment as Blackburn Rovers triumphed with a narrow win against the Swans at Ewood Park.

From the kick off, the hosts pressed the Swans with purpose and were rewarded in the 36th minute through Sam Gallagher's confident finish which put Rovers in front before half-time.

Brereton fired home from the spot just three minutes after the interval following an awful error by Swans’ keeper Benda.

However, the Swans halved the deficit just a few moments later through Jamie Paterson’s first goal for his new Club, setting up a nervy final 38 minutes.

Chances were there for both teams, with Thomas Kaminski pulling off a terrific stop to deny Liaam Cullen an equaliser, whilst the Joe Rothwell could have made the game safe with one of the final opportunities of the game.

Whilst the Swans were losing at Ewood Park, Sam Surridge - who played for the Swans on loan from Bournemouth - slammed in an 85th-minute winner as the Stoke finally saw off Reading in their first home game watched by a crowd in 17 months.

In front of 19,068 fans, which created a cracking atmosphere, the Royals twice came from behind in a memorable game in which most of the scoring was done inside three sensational first-half minutes.

On 25 minutes, Nick Powell put Stoke ahead, but John Swift cashed in on awful defending by the Potters to level 60 seconds later before, just two minutes later, Jacob Brown's low shot was missed by Reading keeper Rafael Cabral.

Swift then delivered the right-wing corner from which Liam Moore's bullet header brought the Royals level for a second time on the hour.

But Stoke had the final word when Potters debutant Mario Vrancic dummied Tommy Smith's right-wing cross and Surridge fired a powerful right-foot shot into the roof of the net.

Turning to Tuesday evening, I would anticipate that Russell Martin will want to shuffle his team and get to see more of his new charges in competitive action.

Similarly, Veljko Paunovic may also make changes as he rotates his ‘thin squad’ - he has made it known that he needs to strengthen his squad.

On that basis, it is even more difficult that usual to forecast the outcome.

That said, whatever side Russell Martin selects, I suspect that Reading, as the home side, will prevail.

    2-1 to Reading

    Hope that I'm wrong <cheers>

It will come down to the line ups that both managers put out. I agree Taff home advantage should prevail but it wouldn't surprise me to see us come out the better side of a 2-1 win

We can’t change that much as we don’t have the depth. Hopefully a few players in by this to give Martin a chance to have a look before the weekend. Another defeat for me.

Top possession on Saturday but poor shots on goal...that stat must be eradicated and quickly. Perhaps naughty boy Piroe will feature and if provided with adequate service give us a confidence boosting win...

I'm not sure we have a 'second string' - just another 11 players who are no better or worse than the 'first string'. I don't see any stand out players in that squad apart from Connor Roberts - and he's out injured until he can be sold.
I'm just looking for an improvement in the defensive shambles that was evident against Blackburn.

tidy prematch thread again Taff , thanks . This Cup game for me is a chance for Martin to assess the squad in match situations , win lose or draw he'll be better placed to know if he can turn our current crop into a decent attractive team of footballers. My view is yes he can

Well I’m off to this one, I expect a few changes so Martin can take a good look at his squad. If I see some decent passing football then I’ll be happy.

As has been said - Martin's still assessing the squad... the home win seems the most likely result but you never know. Far too early to worry if we do lose though.
