Do pompey fans still bother with the whole WUM thing still then...?!
Its just I would imagine you would be a bit more humble in now in view of the fact the status quo / traditional pecking order between saints and pomps has now been firmly re - established. In short pompey are s*it once more and saints are looking very sprightly. In fact I'd say you're in a relegation battle, even Guy Whittingham wouldnt touch the managers job. I hear Steve McClaren might be interested...?

I do try and get more songs going, all of which have words and many of them. The only problem being westie and his goon squad are under the impression that banging the drum for 90mins on end is a good atmosphere. When where away though and Millwall last year a prime example, no drums or bells and 2000 pompey blew the roof of the new Den.

Good to see a pompey fan distancing themselve from the drum and bell. I always imagined that would be incredibly annoying. I personally can not stand instruments at football games.

The bugle is the worst. I saw John, the day after he got it and he told me he'd been up half the night practising. His poor neighbours!

I worked with an old boy, many years ago and he told me about the old style of terrace chants, where the words were spoken loudly rather than sung. He told me about a chant that went something like this

"We are the boys that make no noise, something something something, then (this is the best bit) We spend our tanners and mind our manners...." How times have changed.

Sadly, that's all I can remember. If anyone older than me, knows the whole of this poem, (or indeed any other old chants), I would love to see it.

I used to go with my wooden ratchet rattle, does that help Meowth? I dont remember that rendition though, you may need the assistance of the 87 year old Pompey fan that used to be on BBC 606 but does not appear to be on here<ok>

Its sad because i don't mind drums at Football, bells are annoying. I've witnessed on plenty of occasions drums being put to excellent effect across Europe. The ultras only use it to keep everyone in time with each other. Whereas the kid with the drum at fratton just bangs at it all the time, stopping other people from starting new songs and spreading them across the Fratton end. If you watched our away fans at millwall last years I heard at least 15 different songs and about 5 I had never heard of. For me it is sad that i am kind of working against the drums because i fondly remember them only being use to keep everyone in time in the Late 90's when I started going to the mid 2000's. It only when we started doing well, the atmosphere started dropping. I do hope that soon our atmosphere will soon be backed to it's former glory. I use to love the fact that other fans and players looked on the fixture list and when thay saw Portsmouth away, their heart skipped a beat in fear.

Here's a perfect example of drums being used properly.

That Portsmouth chose to sing the Pompey Chimes is apt indeed. Ask not for whom the bell tolls, Pompey, it tolls for thee!

One can picture the scene: funereal tones rippling across the turf before fading to a reverential hush as the ball is dug from the back of their own net for the fifth time that afternoon. The home crowd silenced, the away end jubilant. No more the Pompey Chimes strike... and the natural metronome the inhabitants of that repellent, fish-scented rock relied upon to know when to guzzle their half-time tea is lost to the void.

But wait... What is this? One participant of the Portsmouth crowd owns a digitial watch, pity winnings from an appearance on The Price is Right! Surely such mechanical wonders are beheld as miraculous devices akin to witchcraft on the shores of Portsea Island. He glances down at it to discern how much longer the match will last. Alas 'tis no use, for the poor fool has yet to learn his numbers. Thankfully, an older head alerts him. Only thirteen minutes have passed and his team are only five goals down.

Despite the presence of additional digits 'pon his fingers and toes, our misguided Portsmouth fanatic is unable to calculate the remaining length of the first half. Is he downhearted? No. For whereas one brain cell is seldom articulate, a large cluster may yet be enough. And thus, the crowd, dispiritted from watching their own team capitulate, is set to the task.

"Seventeen!" "Nine" "Twenty-three" There is wisdom in crowds, perhaps with enough guesses, someone may yet stumble across the correct answer. It is of no use though, for two minutes later the tannoy chirps Southampton's sixth goal was scored by number one, Kelvin Davis, and all other notions of numbers are lost.

Yes manners are something that are thin on the ground at the moment, particularly on this thread for some reason.<whistle>
The thing I love is when the song comes back immediately and modified, one example being, "Harry and Jim, are red and white" being countered with "You're going down, with Harry and Jim"- (which Saints did) or later, "Play up Pompey" becoming "Pay up Pompey" (which they didn't).

That reminds me of this video of what appears to be a Tottenham under 12's game:

Hi SB3. This guy was in his mid sixties about 20 years ago, when I knew him, so he would have been a young supporter, round about 1945 to 1955 if that helps anyone. He used to tell me that often, they would invite/console away fans to "come and drink beer" after the game, as usually they would have been on the losing side back then, Pompey being rather good in those days.

What a shame football lost itself, along the way, from those happy days.

Hi Meowth, sorry I have edited this post as I thought I had suffered a 'Maradonna' moment and suffered 'the hand of Mod'.

I agree, the poster I referred to was a Pompey pensioner but really very alert and PC savvy considering his years. I hope he is ok , cos he was great fun on the old BBC 606.<ok>
