totally, we are very lucky and have managed the cash well.

We actually did well selling rodgers players largely even if the club was not making good use of the funds in terms of losing on a lot of buys.

In 16/17 we spend 71 mil but brought in 76mil and klopp got 4 players. benteke, ibe, allen, skertl, illori, alberto, smith all left.

In 17/18 that accelerated hugely with the sales. 156mil buys but 166mil out. coutinho, sakho, lucas, stewart (big loan fee for origi), sturridge, wisdom.

we might have been horse trading but we made good decisions. IMO FSG push the boat out then with the belief one push would make a team and thats when Alisson, fabinho and keita arrived.

We've been paying for that big push since.

I think we've a fairly decent side as a result. I hope we keep the smart decisions going as peopel change.

    Some good points about Rodgers.

Ancelotti was being looked at along with Klopp don't forget. Out of the two you'd put Ancelotti ahead maybe in terms of experience and success but they didn't pick him they went for the best fit for us. I don't think it was lucky so much as well thought through.

I'm not saying that we don't spend big but we are heavily reliant on balancing books. Again, not a bad thing but it would be nice once in a while where we didn't need to worry about this.

Those players who listed weren't cheap but it's not as if the owners were feeling generous and bought them all from their pack pocket. We've had to sell a lot of players to fund this. We would never have bought Allison and VVD had we not sold Coutinho ... and Klopp didn't want to sell him.

We're supposed to be one of the biggest clubs in the world but it doesn't feel like it. We're definitely one of the smartest ones, no doubt. but I feel this model relies too much on over performance and genius. I don't think any other manager except for Klopp achieves the same level of success. Our net spend has been incredibly low since Klopp took over - the guy is one of, if not, the best manager in the world. There are teams like Everton and Villa, and even Arsenal showing more ambition than us.

As I say, I don't want us to become another City but I also don't want us to settle for 1 CL and 1PL and then suffer another drought. I want a sustained period of dominance where we continue to boost the squad every year. Which is exactly what I think does happen and will continue to happen. I just wanted to stress that January was the straw that broke the camels back for me.

well, its a good point but Its also looking at the (IMO) very top two coaches on the planet outside the mega bucks gaurdiola.

I take the harry redknapp jibes at the time with the large pinch of salt they deserve. would we have had a chat just in case klopp wasn't ready to come off his break? sure why not? did we offer it? well who knows. Would redknapp exaggerate deliberately? yes. Would he have gotten a second hand story and chinese whipsers added a bit? sure why not.

anchelotti was also on a rest break, he later joined bayern. Do we think that he waited for a bayern to confirm guardiola was in fact off to city and rejected us if offered the job? who knows.

At least it was two top men being talked to AND importantly IMO having a back up plan which is often not the case (see spurs disaster)

IMO keep throwing up stand and keep inflating the the revenues and we will just keep playing keepy up. Something has to change in football. Our wage bill is quite large, but yet our top earner is on half that of some clubs. Until that something changes we will be playing the game.

this is top ten club in 2020 wages
    10. Arsenal Average spent per player: £4.78 million Top earner: Mesut Ozil (£350,000-a-week)
    9. Atletico Madrid Average spent per player: £5.37 million Top earner: Jan Oblak (£350,000-a-week)
    8. Liverpool Average spent per player: £5.51 million Top earner: Mohamed Salah (£200,000-a-week)
    7. Manchester United Average spent per player: £6.12 million Top earner: David de Gea (£375,000-a-week) (do we SERIOUSLY believe this average)
    6. Bayern Munich Average spent per player: £6.19 million Top earner: Robert Lewandowski (£275,000-a-week)
    5. Paris Saint-Germain Average spent per player: £6.81 million Top earner: Neymar (£600,000-a-week) (do we SERIOUSLY believe this average)
    4. Manchester City Average spent per player: £6.98 million Top earner: Kevin De Bruyne (£320,000-a-week) (I don't believe any of this personally)
    3. Juventus Average spent per player: £7.71 million Top earner: Cristiano Ronaldo (£540,000-a-week)
    2. Real Madrid Average spent per player: £8.5 million Top earner: Gareth Bale (£600,000-a-week)
    1. Barcelona Average spent per player: £9.37 million Top earner: Lionel Messi (£1.15m-a-week) (inlcudes a lot not sure its all true)

note that chelsea don't even register which hints at something very odd going on there in accounting terms.

We have 2 oil dopers, an italian side that the money comes form nowhere, 2 spanish bankruptees at the top.

I certainly don't think utd are that low either given the amount of players they have but we do pay quite a large big club wage, its just spread round an awful lot of players.

Our top wage is a fraction of the real big names so you'd have to wonder how this balances out.

    Ranking Team Total revenue
    1 Barcelona €715.1m
    2 Real Madrid €714.9m
    3 Bayern Munich €634.1m
    4 Manchester United €580.4m
    5 Liverpool €558.6m
    6 Manchester City €549.2m
    7 Paris Saint-Germain €540.6m
    8 Chelsea €469.7m
    9 Tottenham €445.7m
    10 Juventus €397.9m

you'll note that we are 5th on revenue, yet 8th on wages. you have to wonder how on earth Juventus are not bankrupt wouldn't you.

the numbers are big but the accounting being done is very different by the look of things. some clubs just doesn't seem to add up at all, some are nowhere on wages when they ought to be quite high up.

If we want sugar daddy stuff then say that what we want. the only clubs going to dominate are called city and chelsea. they will continue to outspend everyone including man utd. Its a very bad cycle that eventually will have to be controlled or it will blow up somewhere.

I don't want us to be the club that blows up (again) chasing this as the doping clubs can magic money from nowhere but the rest of us will go to the wall. as long as the dopers are not controlled the or clubs are the ones who will pay.

I agree with your points MITO - the wages is very interesting. We dont have any astronomical earners but we have a very high wage bill. I suspect this mostly propped up by recent success since our contracts are heavily incentive based.

And you're right - I don't want this club to be in trouble financially every again - the owners have done a good job in stabilising us and making us sustainable. However, I don't want to have a repeat of January where we were desperate, Klopp was desperate and we were let down by the owners. Granted, it was a one off but it did open my eyes.

Klopp is one of a kind and the performance of the team reflects him. I really hope that the passion of full stadiums returns as it was because I feel that we and especially JK missed it last year.

regardless of FSG, we should enjoy Klopp while we have him.

I did, one or two things and interfered in someone else's business.

The real low point of the day was a half hour wasted trying to explain how invoices won't get paid if my replacement from r&d won't tell the vendor about the various accounting fudges needed. It was like pulling teeth.

Our wage bill is because it includes huge non playing members of the club unless your specifically talking about playing wage bill?

    from the echo

Liverpool currently employ in excess of 800 staff across the club's different departments who are all included in the latest set of accounts.

In contrast, City's annual wage bill of £260million only includes 449 members of staff - 210 on the football side and 239 in commercial and administration

It's also understood that a number of significant salaries at City are paid by the City Football Group, the holding company that administers all the global clubs under the ownership of Abu Dhabi United Group.

£34m rising to £50m. Not bad signing, better defender than anything they currently have at the club.

Imagine how good United could be if they had owners that would spend some money! <whistle>

I think Varane and Sancho are both very good signings. Question is, will Ole use them effectively?

Agreed. Think it gives them what they needed in those positions. Thing with United is they’ll win games because they have individuals who can win games which is what happened last year. Is ole good enough to win tactical battles though.

    This is a fair point.

I still think we need a proper holding midfielder like Rice so that Ole gives the midfield and wide men the freedom to go forward.
