Late but the alleged biggest show in town has now started.

One of my first memories comes from the 1964 Olympics and the rather catchy tune.

 

So your first memory of the Olympics was a song and not a sport?!

Sums athletics up really.

 

Love the Olympics. Chance to watch sports you don’t normally see much of. Some of them I don’t really understand - was watching the Women's 45kg weightlifting today. Thought it was a bit off when the commentator described one of the competitors as having a very clean snatch.

I watched the men's cycling this morning, really enjoyed it. Ecuadorian guy won it in just over 6 hours, all that separated silver and bronze was the width of a tyre. Incredible.

 

I like the Olympic boxing. 2 lads from Washington in it

 

I remember Fatima Whitbread, the former javelin thrower, being questioned after allegedly having 10lb of crack in her knickers

 

Looking forward to the women's long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault.

 

Not just athletics though, it’s “everything “.

 

Men's fencing on Mon is the foil event which has our sole GB representative Marcus Mepstead, used to be a member of my club until he moved to the US for better training opportunities

 

That must have been one heck of a training opportunity , Over 65’s Club to Fencing Club.

 

I would have thought most of our Fencing team would be from Liverpool.

 

She's got a sniff, could do well.

I've always liked the vibe around the Olympics, a big celebration of humanity, the joy on the smaller countries faces during the parade of nations. The chance for a country to show off some of its culture and history and stuff.

The London Olympics were a massive success and it was great to experience it when I was just finishing school. The national buzz was great , not the level of toxicity you get with the footy.

But it is great when we beat the Americans in any of the athletic competitions.

Eden Chang is competing in the Olympics tomorrow morning, my granddaughter Freya ( the smaller one of the two ) who goes to the same diving club at Crystal Palace is not.
