I wrote somewhere else on this topic and I said, politicians don't win votes for improving sea and river defences, especially if that money takes away from the NHS and other services, which are all vote winners generally (exc Brexit).

I saw the floods in Germany, I focused on one area Klobenz, simply because it's where the Moselle joins the Rhine. That area is always flooded but never considered a risk, despite it being under water around the monument of Kaiser Wilhelm. Yet, now those businesses have water in their basements.

You can go back to as far as the war, when the Americans advanced on the German Army (or was it referred to as Nazi's) their advancement was hindered, by continued rain and the several metres of flooding from the Rhine.

The problem we have now, is governments around the world can hide behind the wording 'climate change' - no it's fooking neglect, you knew for decades this was going to happen, yet you continued to build homes on flood plains and areas of risk.

I think only Angela Merkel has been honest enough to admit the problem is more than climate change so far. We've seen it in the UK, where Boris promised villagers to rethink the home building, and improve the flood defences, also the risks of our dams bursting.

Has anyone heard of money being spent in these areas, no, me neither. When it goes tits up again, we can just say, ah global warming.

I can remember the floods in Venice, can't remember if that was last year. Anyone that has been to Venice, will know the waterway comes up level with St Marks Square. Now I don't know what there flood defences are because I've never researched them, but to the untrained eye there isn't any.

So when the tide rises along with bad whether, where's the water going to go, it's going to flood into the square and all the historic buildings, as well has shops, some are designed to take it, some not. There literally is nothing to stop it. Even if you tried to stop it, it will impact on another area, because the water has to go somewhere.

This was Venice 1966 called the Acqua Granda...

our flood defences plus others close by have been upgraded so the nearest town now has an extra foot or 2 of wall though some bits weren't done presumably as the value wasn't so great .All told it was reputedly a couple of million .
Having said that in the village i was born they have built on the flood plain and sooner or later they will get flooded imo or else the wall will need to be big which just shifts the problem down stream .

Building homes on flood plains is a monumentally stupid idea. I don’t know why they ever get through planning.

Global warming is defo happening though, whether that’s through a mixture of natural
Cycles of warming and cooling and man made carbon release, it’s kind of academic really. Because we’re going to see more and more extreme weather in the next few years.

There is a school of thought that says we shouldn’t bother with flood defences and trying to keep the sea from invading land, as this is the planet’s natural way of dealing with excess water. I.e you can’t stop it, you just end up pushing it somewhere else.

It’s at my old dears house. Put the fake grass down as the old trampoline killed off the grass there before.

Will finish off the rest of the garden with a bit more fake grass when I get round to it
