I get where you’re coming from but all the events require different techniques and skills so I think it would be unfair to only do freestyle races in the water.
All events bar the butterfly IMHO at least have a technical dimension. As a kid I used to floor-wipe much bigger/stronger kids in breast/back stroke races because I was taught good technique and they were a frothing thrash of limbs that looked at times akin to drowning. So on the occasions that I do watch those events, I do appreciate the low drag technique of some competitors.
I still maintain that the best Winter Olympics event would be everyone running onto the ice rink in their trainers and the last person standing gets the gold The event would last maybe two minutes, yet still be more entertaining than the week's worth of figure skating we get while the commentary still bleat about Torville & Dean...
