There are suggestions that a potential deal for Cristian Romero would involve cash plus players from our end. Finally, we're thinking in 3D.
£10m + Sanchez was being suggested a couple of days ago The word "suggested" may be doing a lot of legwork in that
Getting Romero might be even better than getting Gil, I think. He's the kind of top class CB Spurs desperately need, and is only 23. I'm not that optimistic, but we'll see. The big question for me is whether Spurs get someone at his level, or someone at Tomiyasu's level. From what I can tell, Tomiyasu is an average Serie A defender, though that still makes him an upgrade.
The only way we are spending around £50m on a single player in this window is if we are selling Harry Kane. I hope this is not the Bale / Baldini transfer window all over again. Signing a load of players with no PL experience, it would be likely a lot of them would flop or take a long time to adapt.
Although we seem very keen on the player, I cannot see any realistic chance of us agreeing close to €55m cash for a defender (unless we've accepted that we're selling Kane for the best offer we get this summer), so either that price is wildly exaggerated or we're pressing for a cash plus player(s) deal.
We’ve already recouped c.€15m from Foyth, are clearly trying to get rid of Dave (either as part of the deal or separately) who I think would command a higher fee than Foyth, and Toby (one of the biggest earners at the club) also wants to leave - we might not get the biggest fee for him due to his age, but it’s all money banked. What we need in return for those three players is a statement signing (who looks like Romero) and a player more advanced than Rodon and Tanganga but who will cost less as he’s a bit more of a project - this looks like Tomiyasu. Then we have Rodon and Tanganga to step up, and Dier to carry the water. I guess I don’t think that the outlay for Romero is that outlandish if we’re also selling Dave and Toby, if you consider the Foyth and Tomiyasu fees to basically cancel each other out.
There’s a rumour Atalanta may be interested in Sanchez so that €55m fee could be dropped a bit with Sanchez included. As for what he’s valued at nowadays though is up for debate. There was also talk of the naming rights being close to done, albeit there has been numerous ones over the last 12 months so you never know if it’s true or not, if it is then that may allow us to spend a decent chunk on a single player. Ultimately though I think most deals will be dependent on sales. So here’s hoping there are teams stupid enough to want Winks, Dier, Aurier and Sissoko, plus any of Dele, Toby, and either Lo Celso or Ndombele too, one of those two should still fetch a decent amount.
Given Toby's lack of pace and really hefty wages, I'm not seeing much value in him. We'll be lucky if we don't have to keep paying a proportion of his wages to anyone who signs him. Davinson Sanchez has a value but I'm struggling to see it covering half of what Atalanta are said to want for Romero.
I’ve been trying to work it out. Apparently the fee we agreed with Sevilla for Kounde was €30m plus Dave. When Kounde has been mentioned in the context of other clubs, the fee seems to be quoted at around €50-60m. Obviously this is all conjecture, but that would seemingly value Sanchez at c.€25m. So if Atalanta want Dave, or if we can find another buyer in that range, then it’s a significant chunk of the Romero fee. I agree that given everything with Toby (age, him wanting to go back to Belgium/the Netherlands where the clubs aren’t that rich, and him asking to leave) we’d be lucky to take maybe 5m for him. But between them, that’s over half the Romero fee, which is good going.
Half tempted to screengrab this just in case he has to furiously backpeddle on Tuesday... Not a good start that he can't even get the demonym of people from Argentina right
From what the scuttlebutt said, Hitchen actually did agree terms with Skriniar, but Inter then upped the valuation to scare us off
