I honestly think it's too early to give up on Eaves. He had a stop-start season last year, he was clearly short on confidence as a result and it severely affected his form (and ability to trap a ball). But it's all reversible, there's a decent player there still.

I think Wilks could do a job as a cf from time to time. We're not too short of right wingers to free him up.

Happy enough with Magennis. Last time he was with a struggling Bolton. I think he'll be ok in the Championship. Unlikely to set it alight, but ok.

Looking at who we have (or haven't) got, it's surely defence, especially CB's, that's currently the biggest gap? As much as I like Jones and Greaves, they are still young, learning & developing. And if one gets injured or banned, we're left with McCloughlin or Festus? Most teams in the CCC will have much cleverer, stronger, more clinical forwards than what they were up against last season. As you say, could be a rude awakening. Yep, time yet, but increasingly looking like another young loan or freebie to plug the gap, which isn't really what we need?
And how to find a way to get the best of Emmanuel (assuming Coyle continues to get the nod); too good to not use?

Edit: just browsed the U23's squad from that link. Shades of the infamous 10 (?) under Mike Phelan :emoticon-0104-surpr (yep, I know U18's step up, but ....)

I think he will want to leave, he knows he isn't first choice and at his age he wants to be going out and playing games. I've always liked him and I think he'd actually be a better attacking midfielder as he has pretty good passing awareness. But he's decent enough cover. If he has a good pre season then who knows.

Eaves as an attacking midfielder... now that’s a scary thought! Got one of the worst touches I’ve ever seen.

Now if you had said Emanuelle as an attacking midfielder, that would have different...

Jarrod Bowen is on Liverpool's shortlist of potential attacking targets this summer.

He's 29 and he's only ever had two good seasons, both with Gillingham and neither at this level.

He's in the bottom third, of the bottom third, of strikers in this league.

I don't think LFC want Bowen, they are putting him out there interest in Bowen as they will be trying to divert attention away from their real target or using Bowen as leverage to try push through a signing. Liverpool are usually very cagey with their signings and don't tend to leak much info.

For a long time I thought Tom would come good, and nice to see someone keeping faith in him! For a long time I actually thought he offered more potential than Josh - but must say I'm dubious now. Never seems to learn about keeping onside, not getting caught for fouls (whereas Magennis seems to draw fouls), and his touch deserted him last season. Do think he might turn it round somewhere else, but doesn't seem likely to me he'll turn it round with us. Would love to be proved wrong.

Really? He controls a ball pretty well from what I’ve seen.

His hold play is decent and he spends a lot of the game outside the area, just feels like a better role for him than as an outright number nine.

Eaves was born offside and commits more fouls than draws them, as others has said. He lacks a lot of attributes you'd expect in a centre-forward. I don't think he has the first touch, awareness or agility to be a number 10 either. I think it's time to cut our losses and admit he's a below average footballer.

Naturally, would that be wrong? The money comes to the club, so City fans would presumably be happy with that?

I expect West Ham to ask for at least £50 million. He’s young, English & long contract. Probably get in the England squad if he goes to Liverpool.
Actually, does he have Welsh connections? Can’t see anything on his Wiki page.
