Clubs have ways of moving money about and spreading costs and such, so it's not just a case of coughing up the readies every time a transfer is made.
You're right but we also got Keita, Fab and Shaqiri at the same time for approximately another £100m. I agree with you that we do sell to buy but FSG have diverted from this stance at least once before. Maybe they will do it again this window. They need to at least try and get the fans back onside after the Super League fiasco.
That's all about context though. First we had the squad room to do so. Second the previous 2 seasons and the season after we ran a net income on transfers of about 60million pounds. Including the sale of coutinho right before we brought in vvd for 75mil. If you assume we had 40mil per season spare from the prior two seasons as a transfer fund and topped it with the 35 odd mil cash intake.then.one big splash seems very possible from the clubs own internal funds. Third last season we spent 75mil or committed it i should say and took in 38mil. Again hitting the 40odd mil type level. Fourth we already have a full foreign quota so players need to go on loan or be sold soon to enable arrivals This is why imo z is right, we wont buy big unless we sell big. We've spend 36mil already this summer. To buy more would put us up over that guessed threshold and will need to be balanced out by sales.
if we had the perfect selling window we could afford two players more. my ideal football manager fantasy squad would be: Alisson kelleher adrian trent gomez Konate matip VVD Davies Robertson tsimikas Fabinho milner Thiago Henderson jones Saul Ox, kieta Mane Jota Firmino Malen salah elliott Sell minamino, origi, shaqiri, grujic, wilson, neco, awoniyi, ojo, PHILLIPS. still only 16 foreign players that. spend 60mil and recoup 90mil and call it a next spend of around 15mil. (clearly ben davies is an exceptional LCB who will stun the world this year )
BBC reporting this now, £10.5m for Grujic is on the low side but.................Awoniyi to Union Berlin for £6.5m ............ 10% sell on clause for both deals
So we are doubling our money on Grujic and we only paid about £400,000 for Taiwo so a really good deal for someone who never played for us
Where’s @Tobes when you need him? for the last time, player acquisitions and player sales are accounted for differently. Purchases are depreciated over the duration of their contract, possibly longer. So a £35m purchases costs us £7m a year on our P&L. Sales go straight into our P&L. so if we sell, £60m of players for cash, it does not mean we can or cannot afford £60m of players to buy. Much would depend on other variables including when we’ve completed a contract and the asset is payed up or if we’ve shifted on big earners….as well as growth/decline in revenue.
People make too much of amortisation imo as it is just an accounting practice to show players value in accounts which is also used in FFP rules . Tobes is AWOL at present and it is slightly worrying as he did catch covid a while ago though seemed to have ridden it out . He did say he had stuff to sort out but hasn't been seen for weeks now .
It won't be. I alluded to this yesterday - club finances are far more complex than just income-outgoings=money to spend. It's pointless us even trying to guess, imo. For all the talk about Coutinho paying for Virgil and Alisson, the last I heard we hadn't even been fully paid for him yet.
