Oh it was fun.... Just not sure what it offers the championship as a whole and not sure how to implement it to make it more meaningful. I mean it is meaningful in that it dictates stating position, but feels odd with it being "qualifying" rather than a race in it's own right. It also has similar probs to the main race. Lots of action in the pack, little at the front.
Whelp my first ever weekend at Silverstone got cut short! My mate who I went with got a message from his Mum who had tested positive for COVID and he then got a notification from the NHS app saying he has to go home and self isolate dropped him off and got home myself just in time to see the sprint finish. Watched it back on replay and not all that convinced by it honestly. Would prefer if quali was for the race and the sprint was done reverse grid for minimal/less points if they want to have a "fun bit" to the grand prix weekend. Or even do it so after quali, 11th to last participate in the sprint for half points or something so some of the smaller teams can get something still. I dunno, just feels a bit like a if it aint broke don't fix it scenario! Hope Merc can pull something off tomorrow with Max no longer having a rear gunner but can't see it, that RBR is untouchable this year it seems, if Merc can't win at Silverstone then it's all over. Sad I won't be there tomorrow to watch.
George has 3 place grid penalty for contact with Carlos! Looked like racing incedent to me? They even said he was on inside, locked up and went into Carlos! Is this more of the stewards siding with anyone on the outside? It's getting silly, no one on racing line can close the door anymore.
Awww bloody hell mate.... That bloody awful luck. Really sorry to hear that, but hope you're all well at least. I'm gutted for ya.
Yet weaving was mostly ignored. Don't think I'd ever get on a plane with Russell... His luck isn't the best.
The more I think about it, the gap between the sprint race and the actual race is just like a reeeeeeeally long red flag. The race is just basically stopped 17 laps in, with a ... 'off ya pop, come back tomorrow and we'll finish up then.' Pointless really. Basically you could just make the race X laps longer and award points for position at lap X....And then we're heading in to NASCAR levels of silly.
That really sucks taeleon, hopefully you can return next year! Can't believe Sainz didn't get a penalty for a dangerous re-join either, both Tsunoda and Raikkonen had to lift and avoid him. On sprint quali: The points system is, well, pointless. No point risking a move outside the top 3. With a whole race to go there's no point The race distance is odd. After lap 4-5 the gaps had formed and nobody could really do anything about it. Only Alonso getting a phenomenal start created an interesting scenario. The race wasn't long enough for tyre deg to become relevant. A 5 lap or 25 lap race would have been more interesting. The lack of pitstops meant you knew nobody was going to do anything interesting. The best F2 sprint races have someone go all-out on a 1-stop strategy, scything past drivers slipping around on dead tyres in the final couple of laps. Quali is devalued, and the one lap performance becomes less important. Max underperformed in qualifying, but he's got back ahead in the sprint race and will probably have a lights-to-flag victory today. FP2 completely pointless.
I didn't vote, I am missing out because of work. I am going to go with Lewis, because it seems unlikely but it is his home GP and frankly if he doesn't reign in Max here he won't for the season.
I’m only a few miles from Silverstone so there’s been helicopters going over all day. I need to flag one down and hitch a lift. I’ll get some tickets for next year. I say this every year.
That was a good intro for C4 coverage with Top Gun tribute - well promo for the re release and new film.
On the plus side it’s a beautiful day for the British Grand Prix. A proper scorcher. Maybe that plays even more into Red Bull’s hands though. Cheering all the British drivers today. What a fabulous crop of them we have.
