When we were looking for a replacement for Quinny, I thought that we should have gone for John Hartson. He'd have been a much better focal point than Laslandes or Flo! Hartson was strong, really good in the air and his aggression would have got the crowd going. Anyone with similar thoughts on past players where we made the wrong choice?
That's a good point. We could identify the right player that we need but getting them in is a whole other matter.
Tbh I don’t think many could have predicted the disaster Flo would turn out to be. Looked a very good signing at the time and scored on his debut iirc.
I'm just going to leave this out there in preparation for whatever inevitable inanity monty manages to come up with in this thread... You're an idiot.
When we got relegated under Reid, top scorer 4 goals, losing 1-0 to Southampton, premier passions et al, near the end of the season there was talk of bringing Marco back. I know he wasnt the player he was, but I always thought the boost everyone would have got, and i like to think he could have performed above himself for a couple of games of the back of this, he could have made the difference. A couple of good performances from him may have been enough! Gutting though relegation was at the time, the next 4 seasons may not have been quite so memorable if we'd stayed up mind.
True. It shouldn't have taken much football knowledge, though, to realise he was a player that preferred the ball to feet rather than aerial passes which was our game.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic remember reading an article in the echo he was on the verge of signing think it was Reidy talking about him , maybe some members can recollect it better found it https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/4661590/zlatan-ibrahimovic-sunderland-peter-reid-juventus/ REID IT AND WEEP Zlatan Ibrahimovic almost joined Sunderland TWICE before he signed for Juventus
Reid it and weep indeed! What a team we could have had with some better decisions (and not going for the cheaper option).
There are many but we pursued Darren Bent before plumping for Gray and Stead when Mick McCarthy was boss. He signed for Charlton and scored against us on his debut although Gray scored in that game too despite being as utterly out of his depth as I can remember any striker looking for us in the top flight.
Jan Mvila lovely footballer not sure why we didn't sign him. Yes I know about being clever and trying to get him on free but was poor business as far as I am concerned
That was a particularly ****e summer of signings. Bent was £1. 5 or 2 million but we weren't willing to spend that much. Went for Gray instead for £1 million iirc. I was a bit out on the Bent fee: Bent completed a transfer to Charlton Athletic on 1st June 2005, which was worth an initial fee of £2.5 million, but would have risen to £3 million if he made an agreed number of appearances for Charlton and for England
So David, would you like M'Vila for 6 million? He's desperate to sign and was great on loan. Ok then.... what about Ndong for 13 million? He's **** and he's got stupid hair.
