    Worcester 8.30 Mr McGuiness

Runs his best races at Worcester and his 3rd two runs ago shows that he's still competitive at this level. Worcester is the track where Rosmary Gasson has reached most of her wins. The horse is on a handy mark and Ben Post knows it very well. This obviously can't be a confident selection given the fact that he last won in 2017 but looks worth a small each way bet.

I was looking at Magical Lagoon but she is a non-runner in Suwayra's race now. She was a 2/1 shot so there will be a rule 4 to early prices now.

I was surprised to see Madonnadelrosario odds-on while Magical Lagoon was still in the race. I had felt the O'Brien filly was worth chancing on debut at 7/1 but she was a shade disappointing in 5th place. The winner that day was Juncture, who looked very smart but has not been out again since, though she is entered in the Moyglare. The third Seisai and fourth Discoveries have both won since and it looks like Madonnadelrosario ran in an above average maiden first time up. By Caravaggio, you would think she should improve from her first run and she has drifted out to a backable price now. The worry is that she seems friendless in the market but she probably started out at a ridiculously short price.

As Grade One says, Suwayra is a possible for Dermot Weld. By Siyouni out of an Azamour mare. The stable had a very promising looking 2YO in Homeless Songs last week and she could be smart.

Joseph O'Brien has Livia Celeste here and she is by Galileo out of Nell Gwyn. That is breeding couplet that has been oft tried and only one, Waver, managed to win in their career, so it has been a bust breeding in most cases. The same pairing often gives very mixed results though and maybe she will turn out to be the one who bucks the trend.

The last time I ignored a 2YO newcomer from the Lyons yard on account that it had been backed to a shortish price it backfired in spectacular fashion as the horse dotted up. Cairde Go Deo has been backed for the yard here and she is a 105,000 yearling by Camelot. There wasn't much love from the tipsters early doors but the market suggests that she is the one most likely to win because she is all the way in to 6/4 Fav. Maybe she is a bit special but the odds are not great with a few unknowns here.

Often enough I desert a horse and it goes in second time, so I thought I would stick with Madonnadelrosario here. I like the filly Dicoveries, who was ahead of her last time and although that one only won narrowly next time from Tuesday, both fillies looked to have a good future. I think Madonnadelrosario will get a mile and if she progresses at all from her first run it sets a reasonable standard for the newcomers to beat.

    5.30 Leopardstown Madonnadelrosario 11/4

Japan is dropped to Group 3 this evening in the Meld Stakes. Available at 6/4, some may see him as a penalty kick in this grade.

Japan has been generally disappointing and his win from Crystal Ocean in the Juddmonte looks something of a fluke in the context of his overall career. He did get a win at Chester in the Ormonde but that was a bit of a slog fest and the runner up Trueshan was a bit of a disappointment next time in the Northumberland Plate when 6th as 5/2 Fav. Japan himself disappointed the next twice to the extent that his 120 Handicap rating was dropped to 114 now. That is the lowest he has been rated for more than two years and I don't think that is a good sign. The biggest Elephant in the room is today's trip of 9F though. You need to go back to Japan's 2YO season to see him running at less than 10F and this is more than half a mile shorter than the Ormonde, where he beat a horse that ran over 2 miles next time.

I looked at Sinawann who gets 3 lbs from Japan tonight. With his 111 rating he works out the same as Japan under these conditions. He has been a shade disappointing this season though and steps up a furlong tonight. I couldn't quite buy into him.

Instead I went with Erzindjan, who was disappointing last time. He didn't seem to get home at all over 10F on soft/heavy last time and dropped a furlong he now encounters a sound surface for only the second time in his career. The Weld stable are in better form now than when he last ran and he gets 13lbs from Japan and 10 lbs from Sinawann. Allowing for the 1 lb overweight Erzindjan meets Maker Of Kings on 4 lbs better terms than when one and a quarter lengths behind him in the Amethyst Stakes.

A bit of a dark shot but I took the 3YO in the hope that he will show improved form on a sound surface.

    6.00 Leopardstown Erzindjan 10/1

Maddonadelrosario was dire. She was hard ridden to keep tabs on the favourite and was never comfortable before weakening badly. She's gone backwards from her debut this evening.

Great shout with Suwayra Grade One. Even allowing for the Rule 4 she was well backed and was always coming to claim the Lyons filly. None of the rest got into it and I am sure Aidan will be scratching his head regarding where his filly goes now. That wasn't much of a compliment to Discoveries and Juncture, who seem well thought of.

Well Japan won but it was no penalty kick. He got first run on a couple and scrambled home by a short head. The runner up was rated 107, so not exactly a ringing endorsement of Japan's OR.

I was a bit disappointed with Erzidjan who sat at the back with Sinawann in the early stages. He didn't run to his previous meeting with Maker Of Kings, who was the runner up this evening. I suspect he may have run close to his rating but Maker Of Kings has improved since they last met. I would leave Japan on his rating and upgrade the runner up. Sinawann ran well but had ground to make up and couldn't get there a neck away in third. This was another consistent run from him at about the 110 mark I would say.

Japan fans got paid but probably will need to invest some of their winnings in new boxer shorts. :emoticon-0107-sweat
