We didn't lose The game was a draw and decided on penalties, nowt to do with the game tactics that were used during the game. I haven't presented anything that can justify the approach England took throughout the tournament? I now present to you England's first ever European Championship final... You aren't serious, now? Surely.
Can you present the trophy to me? Losers always whine about their best....... How do we win a World Cup, or the next Euros? Same again and hope the other teams get worse?
No, they weren't So when Spain dominated the tournaments from 2008 to 2012, they were playing defensive football? When Germany had Muller, Ozil, Podolski and Klose, they were playing defensive football? I beg to differ.
Well we are making progress because we've never reached the final before. This is a very young side who will continue to grow together and get better over the next few years. I'm not whining, you just can't get into detailed debate about your own opinion. You know it doesn't stand up to scrutiny, hence why you try to keep moving the goalposts.
Their styles mirrored their footballing cultures. We're taking lads from a fast and furious league with lots of turnovers and attacking intent and trying to get them to play possession, risk free football sitting inside their own half. While other countries are realizing you need to take risks to win games.
Will they? The Italy performance was a carbon copy of the Croatia semi final in 2018. The only difference is who we played up to that particular game. Three years, different personnel, same performance. Put us in the other side of that draw - Italy in our place. They still get to the final, do we?
Yes. I think this team will continue to get better, they're improving all the time. England and Italy were the two strongest teams in the tournament. I would have backed England to come through the other side of the draw. World cup semi-final and euro's final and you are finding reason to complain because we aren't playing attacking football which is the only way you can be successful these days. Apparently.
It's coming home. We're not going out to get it though, we're hoping for someone to pop it through the door for us.
Just joined this thread and sorry if I'm off track here but does anyone else agree that the 8pm kick off on a Sunday helped cause all the troubles? I know it's all about getting the right time for viewing figures around the world but surely 5pm even would have been better.
I'm not sure what you mean? Are you still sticking to the belief that only teams that play attacking football win things? Even though I've already countered that with Leicester and Chelsea winning trophies with defensive football. Portugal won the last Euro's and they were defence minded. How did that happen?
He scored 3 goals. The same as Nani. 3 of their 7 games finished 0-0. You don't win tournaments like that, surely?
Yes, when you win the final. The fundamental difference is wanting to win rather than not wanting to lose.
Okay. Portugal used their defensive tactics in the final and beat France who had been playing free-flowing attacking football. How did that happen
When you've got a Ronaldo up front. You seem to be pinning your hopes on the players improving a flawed system to the point that it isn't flawed any more. Something you can do with a Ronaldo. Do we have someone like that?
The flawed system that has got us to a world cup semi-final and then followed up with our FIRST EVER EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL. Ronaldo didn't score in the final. He only scored 3 goals all tournament. So that doesn't really stand up, does it?
We've had three games over three years where we want to be in tournaments. Four if you include the Nations League. Lost to Croatia, lost to Italy. Lost to Belgium. Beat Denmark. Do we hang about in the hope these players improve, which is your strategy, or do we tweak the system to get the best out of what we have, considering that it's not a given we'll get better simply through players maybe improving. What if these players don't get better? I'd prefer these lads didn't end up like your heroes, hated for failing so predictably and so regularly. We could have won this tournament with a more attacking approach. Every team we played struggled to contain us when we wanted to go forwards. If you can't see that's not where we should be headed, then there's no point going round and round. We'll find out for sure next year, although I can tell you the result now if we keep playing with the same philosophy. We'll go ahead in a game, sit off, concede and get beat by a team that wants to win.
