The government has fended off an attempt by MPs to force it to reverse its cut to spending on overseas aid.

The House of Commons voted by a majority of 35 to keep the budget for international development at 0.5% of national income.

But several Tory MPs joined Labour and other parties in an attempt to reinstate the 0.7% figure in place until earlier this year.

Ministers say the cut is needed to keep public debt down during the pandemic.

The government has faced cross-party criticism over the reduction - including from all the UK's living former prime ministers - which amounts to almost £4bn.

I'd be totally in favour of increasing foreign aid, but only if it went to those genuinely in need to help them out of their situation and to rebuild a future. From what I can see, very little reaches those people, as others take their cut first, or the funds are diverted, and the schemes do not seem to be sustainable.

how are club executives going to comply with the rule that they interview a black person for manager positions when they would be taking part in "hate speech" if they identified the person as black?

An interesting take on Jamaica's request for reparations.

He's basically arguing that they could perhaps have a claim on the Spaniards, as they killed the native Carib's, but to show a loss, they'd have to compare to non-slaves. Given the average wage in Jamaica is far higher than West Africa, the Jamaican's haven't a claim, and possibly owe us money.
