No shame in losing to an Italy side (who were defo the tournament's best team) on penalties, gutting as it is Think we scored too early in a way and then couldn't shift the defensive mentality, never got going in that second half. None of the subs really paid off either and a couple of awful penalties (Rashford in particular). Oh well. Still proud of this team overall and they've given us a brilliant tournament to remember. Top stuff.
Can anyone tell me what sort of advantage a player get by taking a penalty run up like Rashford did? You look like an utter cock when you miss!
I think the idea is to make it harder for the keeper to know when it's coming, hopefully they then commit too early and you pop it the other side. Pogba for France did it well. I'm not willing to re-watch but i think he did indeed get the keeper to commit and then went the other way. He did then miss of course...
No shame in losing to Italy as they were the better team overall. I think our lads did well to even get this far. Let's hope that we progress from this.
Said at the start that semi final would be an excellent return so beaten finalists was one better. They did well over all, Italy were just better. Best team in the tournament and worthy winners. Southgate will hopefully learn from this and then go and take another step forward. Substitution management needs to be looked at!
The technique is known as The Stuttering ****er Approach. But it is what it is. The game was there to be won at 1-0
You dont see a golfer doing that during mid swing do you? In taking a penalty like that you are basically telling the goalkeeper during your run up that you are not going to hit it hard.
Well that was a shame. I won't be too hard on the players and coaches as the torna went better than expected but I do feel that Southgate could have made some changes earlier. We were under the pump for a while. Felt sorry for the young lads missing at the end - would have been nice if Grealish stepped up to the plate instead of a teenager. Thought Pickford had a blinder - he put behind his wobbly showings of past game and a half and performed and gave his absolute all. Maguire showed good bottle to take a peno too. Oh well. The experience will make them stronger.
It was a ****e penalty but he had essentially been told 'here you go, i'll give you 30 seconds of game time then you go and win it for us'. Absolutely ridiculous. Not only that, he took Walker and Henderson off and threw two wingers on to defend a ****ing corner then whatever injury time we had. The three lads who missed penalties are not to blame.
2 speed merchants who have the ability to affect the game if given game time were thrown on with a minute left. I wonder when GS decided he’s settling for pens, 90 minutes or 105 minutes?
I don’t really blame the penalty takers too much last night, couple were indeed horrendous but penalties are a lottery really. I would rather a player rifle it into a corner like how Kane and Maguire done rather than a tip toe run up and/ or not hit it with enough venom but the loss is on the manager. Formation, tactics and subs were all wrong. Said before the tournament I felt he was the weak link and I don’t think I was wrong. Think he’s been the product of fortunate timing with this squad and we’ve gotten to the semi and final of the last two tournaments despite of him, not because of him. I love his passion for the country and I think he creates a good vibe and feeling of togetherness but he’s so tactically bland and unambitious at a time where we’ve got one of the most talented squads around. You look at the pedigrees of the two managers last night and it’s telling: Middlesbrough and U21s vs multiple trophies in different countries and leagues. Apparently he’s confirmed he’s staying on for the World Cup, I hope he learns from his mistakes but I just don’t have much faith in him tbh.
