Southgate could not miss the penalties himself and he admits they he decided who was taking the penalties, so he sent two players on with 90 seconds to go in extra time and they both missed from the spot.

No surprise at all that the three that missed are getting abuse online. The fact that they happened not to be Caucasian is purely indicative of the make-up of the squad. If Black Lives Matter, they will boycott Qatar 2022, where poorly paid migrant workers died building the stadia in 50 degrees heat.

Had England won on penalties, the English TV and media would have been talking them up as all-time greats yet the reality is that England were the better team for 1 minute and 57 seconds. Italy totally dominated the game, Italian captain Giorgio Chiellini man-marked England captain Harry Kane totally out of it; and if Federico Chiesa’s first half shot had gone left of the post, Italy would probably have gone on to win in 90 minutes.

Gareth Southgate’s game plan did not deviate from the rest of the tournament until he did not bring Grealish on with 25 minutes to go. He was out-thought by Roberto Mancini, whose Italian team is devoid of the big name stars of the past but is 34 games unbeaten. Well done Italy, It’s Coming Rome.

 

Oh well, England did their best but just not quite enough. Italy deserved to win over the 90 minutes though to be honest, should have finished it off in the second half of normal time.

Felt really bad for Saka, poor guy was devastated. Where was the world class diving Sterling during the penalty shootout though? He and Kane were an absolute disgrace with their diving antics the whole game. If Sterling did take a penalty he would have probably fallen over when a light breeze suddenly appeared, fallen over and demanded a red card for the breeze and another penalty. The ref did not stand for any of Kane's and Sterling's antics thankfully.

Just a shame one of the teams had to lose.

England have a great squad of young players though and will only get stronger.

Whereas Scotchland are just utter ****, always have been, always are and always will be. The SNP Jocks will celebrate the Italian victory as they are pathetic perennial losers filled with inferiority and angst.

 

Only seen the match from 85th minute onwards. Looked relatively even in ET. England's penalty taking (other than Kane and McGuire) was poor.

Roy Keane (on the ITV coverage) was funny. You could see him getting really angry about Sterling and Grealish not stepping up to take a penalty and letting a 19 year old kid do it instead.

How can the five penalty takers be decided before the game when you don't know who is going to be on the pitch at the end of extra time? You can decide at the start of the game who the five might be but that will change if you have used substitutes before you get to the end of extra time.
