I think when the dust settles, regardless of how well we've done in this tournament we will look back on this as a massive opportunity lost. We had virtually no travel, it was a home tournement in the end and we didn't really test Italy enough in that final. Proud of Southgate and the team for getting as far as we did, but doesn't mean I don't think this was ultimately an opportunity lost. We have a young team and we have just got to hope that this is the beginning and theres more to come. Won't be too many of us still around if it's another 55 years.

Have to hold on to the hope I suppose, I have tried to emphasise the positivity, but I think this would have been a more special win than any future World Cup or Euro would be, although I’d happily take a win in Qatar i think it wouldn’t be as special as it would have been in front of the home crowd tonight after the year we have had and the unexpected nature of getting to the final with unusually good performances.

Expectation will be massive for Qatar and anything less than another final will probably see them get dogs abuse even if it will be extremely difficult.

In all honesty my immediate feeling is that I’m pretty burnt out with football after the constant **** churned out by Saints and a real surprise turnup by England ultimately only another setup for hard disappointment in the end.

But hey ho, they don’t deserve criticism. We should be proud but it’s just hard to say that wholeheartedly right now as the mind just sits on the what ifs, it would have felt better if we had been stuffed!

Still proud but so gutted <wah><wah>

Think we actually scored too early it made everyone start thinking about what could happen. Thought we still carried threat for first 30 mins but very little after that until et.

To me it felt like the nerves really kicked in at beginning of second half and we couldn't turn the tide. Think their experience in these big games was difference in end unfortunately for us.

Absolutely no shame in taking this Italy side (who were comfortably best team in tournament imo) all the way as hard as it is to take. Thought Saka at 5 was an odd choice though and never really fancied Sancho.

Overall can still be proud of the team and Gareth def put '96 ghosts to rest imo. We had a genuinely competitive team this summer with heart and identity who nearly, just nearly, went all the way.

I know he's not everyone's cup of tea and that the football isn't hugely entertaining but surely Southgate has shown hes brave enough to make unpopular decisions and that they mostly are correct?

It's also worth noting that as well as being our second greatest manager in terms of tournament performances, he's also presided over around a quarter of all of England's major tournament ko wins ever.

In my opinion you'd have to be extremely bitter or single minded to not acknowledge his success and that he deserves our support.

I've rambled but my final point is that regardless of result football still came home this summer. The team exceeded expectations, showed great desire and had the entire country behind them.

That's what the sport is about isn't it? Uniting people and that power and adrenaline of the country stopping still for those big matches.

From my point of view watching England (this century) then the vast majority of tournaments are either misguided hope or completely apathy. The only exceptions where it felt like the entire country were tuned in and supporting the lads was this year and 2018.

Southgate you're the one. You still turn me on, and football's coming home again.

Well who knows what the full story is, but no doubt this is the only thing that people will associate with England now. Oh, and the racist abuse.

Breaks my heart that a small minority of idiots tarnish the lot of us with this sort of behaviour.

Anyway, regarding the game, obviously gutted, but we weren't beaten. We didn't lose. Over 120 minutes. Also didn't lose in the entire tournament. All came down to one penalty kick/save whatever. You literally can't get closer to winning a tournament, but of course it's just so very English to achieve incredible things but then be miserable afterwards.

The pain will pass guys. This was the greatest tournament of our generation (and more), and we have a brilliant young team.

Apparently the violence is because of the idiots trying to get in without a ticket. The guys beating them were legit ticket-holders. If that's true, then fair enough.

Once again the ****ing stuttered penalties don't pay off. If I were England manager, I'd ban them. Pick a spot and smash it home, because of the keeper doesn't move, you're at a considerable disadvantage. Even that stuttered penalty that Italy scored was nearly saved. Meanwhile no one was saving Maguire or Kane's penalties. Though Sancho and Rashford should have been brought on at least a bit early so they could touch the ball before being asked to take a penalty (though I think Rashford did some defending and took a throw in)

I was hoping Pickford could be the hero though and bring back 90s boy band hair style/curtains

We're just saving our first tournament win in 55 years (or 56 years by then) for the more prestigious world cup next year!

I do think it was very unfair to put all that pressure on a 19 year old with the 5th penalty.

The key miss was Rashford’s anyway where we were one up, he had already sent the keeper the wrong way and then missed the open goal, we didn’t recover from that.

Not that I’d have had the balls to do what any of them did and pens is a lottery. We should have done it in normal time.

There's no glory in penalties. I wouldn't feel totally satisfied had we won the final on pens, and neither do I feel satisfied that we were defeated.

Italy get a shiny trophy, but the truth of the matter is, they didn't win a game beyond the quarter finals.

We can say that it was wrong to sub 2 players on right at the end just for a penalty and that Saka is too young and inexperienced to take one. But ultimately, you can't put 120 minutes of football down to a few kicks.

The reason we didn't win is because Southgate was afraid of Italy so set us up not to lose rather than utilise our attacking talent - and in fairness, you can see why he did it.

It isn't even an awful decision. It is exactly what has got us to the final and it took us bloody close to winning it. I just hope that moving forwards we look to dominate teams with the likes of Foden, Sancho, Kane, Mount, Grealish, Sterling Etc rather than sit back. If we would have played on the front foot like Spain did against them then we would have won. But just sitting back defensively cost us.

    Bloody good month though ey?

It’s all well and good not liking stuttered penalties, but “just smash it” is what Pearce and Waddle did.

Exactly, pretty sure all those penalty-takers chosen last night are scoring 10 out of 10 in the penalty sessions at training. It's not the technique but the occasion and the pressure.

Maybe Gareth thought that young minds could handle it better. Rashford's pen goes a few inches to the right and we'd be hailing Southgate a genius and we'd all still be drunk and celebrating. Tiny, tiny margins, and in the end it basically just all comes down to luck. One team has to lose unfortunately.
